Water Energy Nexus Water generates energy; Energy moves water • Energy is embedded in water use. By conserving water, the amount of energy needed to pump, transport, treat, and dispose of water is also reduced • Water-use efficiency has been identified as the largest single new supply available for meeting the state’s growing water demand over the next 25 years • 2 Water Energy Nexus Water agencies are the largest energy end-users • California’s consumption of water-related energy represents: 19% of the state’s electricity 30% of its natural gas 88 billion gallons of diesel fuel … and the demand is growing! 3 Water Energy Nexus California’s Water Action Plan • Model California’s successful energy efficiency programs California’s per capita energy consumption has remained relatively flat since 1973 4 Water Energy Nexus California’s Water Action Plan • Cut the amount of energy needed by water utilities for pumping, purification systems, and other water processes • Reduce energy waste from causes such as system leaks, poorly maintained equipment, defective meters, and improperly operated systems • 5 Water Energy Nexus Current SDG&E programs save both energy and water • Some reduce the energy needed to heat water: Clothes washer rebate (in partnership with SDCWA) ShowerStart showerhead rebate Free Home Energy & Water Savings kit • Others conserve water from increased efficiency: Commercial HVAC-related programs (cooling towers) Variable frequency drives on water pumps High-efficiency motors in pumping stations Micro-bubble filtration systems 6 Water Energy Nexus Energy/Water Pilot Programs • The Energy Commission’s 2005 Water Energy Report asked whether the regulated energy utilities can and should do more to promote water conservation • In 2007, the larger IOUs were tasked with developing Water/Energy Pilot programs Develop partnerships with water agencies Undertake jointly-funded water conservation programs Evaluate and measure the results • 7 Water Energy Nexus Energy/Water Pilot Programs • The pilot programs focused on cold water energy savings (production, transportation, use, treatment, and disposal) • SDG&E developed and managed three Water/Energy Pilot programs: Large Company Audits Managed Landscapes Recycled Water • The pilots were completed December 31, 2009 and the results are due out later this year 8 Water Energy Nexus What’s next? • • An updated CEC Water Energy report is due out mid-2010 If cost-effective energy and water savings can be demonstrated, SDG&E and the other IOUs may add water conservation programs to their energy efficiency portfolios SDG&E is proud to be a part of the critical effort to address California’s growing demand for both energy and water • 9 Water Energy Nexus Janis Heppell [email protected] 2009 California Water Action Plan waterplan.water.ca.gov/ 2005 California Energy Report http://www.energy.ca.gov/2005publications/CEC-700-2005011/CEC-700-2005-011-SF.PDF SDG&E’s Complimentary Home Energy & Water Savings Kit sdge.com/residential/energyefficiencykit/ • 10
