Reflecting (2.1)
Date
2.1 Use and evaluate the skills of active listening including paraphrasing,
reflecting and summarising.
What is reflecting?
The meaning of a person’s experience is expressed in thoughts feelings and
behaviour. When you use the skill of reflecting it is important to pick up on these
feelings thoughts and behaviours. This skill involves reflecting back to the
person what you have heard and seen in your own words.
Exercise:
In Pairs: In each case write out the words you would use to respond to
this person.
1. I’m feeling very nervous at the moment; I’m just about to do a presentation
to a group of students on the anatomy of the eye. I’ve never been very good
at presentations and when I was a student I completely messed up. I felt really
stupid and failed the exam. I’m terrified and can feel myself wanting to back
out of it and go home. I just don’t know what to do?
2. I’m not sure what to do? My mother and father are always fighting and it is
very difficult for me. I’ve got my mocks next week and it is difficult for me to
revise. It’s upsetting my little sister and I find myself trying to stop them fighting
but they just end up shouting at me. This really stresses me out and I end up
going to my friend’s house.
12
Summarising (2.1)
2.1 Use and evaluate the skills of active listening including paraphrasing,
reflecting and summarising.
Summarise the following passages

I don’t know what to do? …….I’m having problems with my manager at work,
he is constantly putting me down in front of other members of staff. I’m not
sleeping now and I’m struggling to keep awake at work. ……I’m getting really
grumpy with the kids and find myself shouting at my husband. I’m not eating
properly either as it makes me feel sick. … I feel so stupid that I feel like this.
The other day I went to the school to fetch my little girl and didn’t see my friend
waving at me. ……. She’s really angry at me for ignoring her. The problem is
you see I didn’t notice her ….. I find myself crying a lot of the time.
Scenario 2
I’m really excited about the weekend … we are going on holiday to Cyprus and
I am going paragliding and snorkelling… I’ve always wanted to do this and swim
with dolphins. How about that? I’m really sad that my Dad won’t be with us. I
will really miss him.
13
Scenario 3
I’m really struggling at college at the moment… you know all the assignments
are due at the same time … I don’t know where to start. My tutor is putting
pressure on me and so is my Mum. I really enjoy being with my boyfriend
because I can forget all about college and all the work.

Confrontation.
Exercise
Read the following extracts and write:
1. A basic empathic response
2. An advanced empathic response
3. A reason for the advanced empathic response.
A young female client: “I should get back in touch, after all I do love him. I feel
very alone without him. Yes, I’ll do that. I’ll try to ring him tomorrow and see if
we can meet and patch it up.”
A male client, 42: “It’s not just the way he speaks to me, it’s everything he does.
When the office is busy he ignores me – like as though I wasn’t there – (muscles
around mouth and jaw tighten, hand clenched). He makes me feel this big
(gestures with thumb and forefinger). Insignificant.”
Female, 63: “Oh, I don’t know, what’s the point? We’d been married nearly 40
years you know. All those plans for our retirement together, and then he went
and died on me. He always was a selfish man. (Laughs). It’s been nearly two

33
IMMEDIACY EXERCISE
Consider the following situations and write out an immediacy response for each
that challenges the client to a new perspective. Work alone while writing out
the responses, then read your answers to others a small group and give and
receive feedback.
1. The client is a person of the opposite sex. You have had a few sessions
and it has become evident that the client is attracted to you and has begun
to intimate a desire for more intimacy.
2. In the initial session with this client the terms of the relationship (time, fees,
boundaries, confidentiality, etc.) were agreed.
The fee agreed was
considered at that time as “more than fair” by the client. During the last two
sessions the client has begun to talk of the expense of counselling, and
states that there is a wish to finish as quickly as possible. The client sees
this as your responsibility. You had thought that the issue of fees had been
agreed and resolved.
34
3. The client is obliged to see you as part of a probation order. Initially he is
co-operative but has recently become quite resistant. This takes the form
of questioning your competence, questioning the value of counselling,
arriving late and passive resistance.
Task 2
In pairs:
Think of a person who you have unfinished business with in your
relationship
Role-play
Describe to your partner the other person and her/his likely response to you.
Talking directly to them try and use immediacy skills to address the issue you
have with them and what you would like to say.
