What is reflecting? The meaning of a person’s experience is expressed in thoughts feelings and behaviour. When you use the skill of reflecting it is important to pick up on these feelings thoughts and behaviours. This skill involves reflecting back to the person what you have heard and seen in your own words. Exercise: In Pairs: In each case write out the words you would use to respond to this person. 1. I’m feeling very nervous at the moment; I’m just about to do a presentation to a group of students on the anatomy of the eye. I’ve never been very good at presentations and when I was a student I completely messed up. I felt really stupid and failed the exam. Tutor Feedback 33 IMMEDIACY EXERCISE Consider the following situations and write out an immediacy response for each that challenges the client to a new perspective. Work alone while writing out the responses, then read your answers to others a small group and give and receive feedback. 1. The client is a person of the opposite sex. You have had a few sessions and it has become evident that the client is attracted to you and has begun to intimate a desire for more intimacy. 2. In the initial session with this client the terms of the relationship (time, fees, boundaries, confidentiality, etc.) were agreed. The fee agreed was considered at that time as “more than fair” by the client. During the last two sessions the client has begun to talk of the expense of counselling, and states that there is a wish to finish as quickly as possible. The client sees this as your responsibility. You had thought that the issue of fees had been agreed and resolved. 34 3. The client is obliged to see you as part of a probation order. Initially he is co-operative but has recently become quite resistant. This takes the form of questioning your competence, questioning the value of counselling, arriving late and passive resistance.
