The Junior Space Design Competition (JSDC) is
designed for aspiring young engineers and
scientists who want to learn about the basics of
futuristic space settlement design. Teams of up
to 4 develop a marketing brief for the space
settlement scenario, with the top eight finalists
presenting their briefs in November at the
annual JSDC Presentation Event. Be part of this
exciting opportunity to learn more about space
settlement and marketing strategies.
This course develops a practical understanding
and skills in the fundamental principles of screen
acting. Activities cover the use of video camera,
microphone, boom pole and clapper. Students
will learn about voice, movement, naturalism,
crew roles and commands, hitting the mark,
focus, re-direction and continuity which will be
taught by specialised staff at Filmbites Youth
Film School.
Have you ever wanted to make your stories
come to life? Create tales of epic battles, write
comical plots, construct heroic characters and
evil villains. Develop your writing skills in a class
chain story and then make your very own
masterpiece. Finally, you will bring your own
story to life by creating it in a virtual 3D world
using the power of MinecraftEdu.
You will use GameMaker to design and create
your own computer games through planning,
problem solving, investigation and patience. You
will place them on your very own gaming
website. Who knows? Your games may become
famous!

Calling all budding doctors on a journey into the
world of the human body. You will be dissecting
real hearts, lungs, eyes and more. You will look
deeply into how your body works, analyse the
main organs and investigate some of the world's
worst diseases. You will learn first aid from an
Emergency Department nurse and apply this
knowledge to a critical situation. Definitely not a
course for the squeamish!
“Anything is possible, one stroke at a time”
Zentangles are a form of art which have specific
steps that anyone can achieve. Studies have
shown that practising this art-form increases
mental retention, stimulates creativity, improves
one’s mood and calms and resets the brain. In
this course you will learn how to create your own
Zentangles whilst also studying the physiological
effects on your body using scientific
methodology. Are previous studies correct? Can
you replicate them? What are your results and
conclusions? This course combines mental
health with art and science to create unique
opportunities for you. Course costs include all
materials, which are then yours to keep and use
into the future.
Can bacteria be beautiful? Is there such a thing
as a virus with vibrancy? This course is for those
who like to break the boundaries. Who says that
art and science have to be separate? Certainly
not Leonardo da Vinci! Let your passion for
science inspire you to produce a work of art.
Maybe you will paint. Perhaps you will sculpt.
You could even use photography or create
digital art. The choice is yours. You will be
required to provide an in-depth explanation of
the science behind your art. There will be an
exhibition of all work at the culmination of the
course.

What do we think of when we consider the
Cosmos? Well, it's a super BIG, BIG place with
lots going on and new discoveries being made
every day. Did you know supernovas help us
determine the age of the universe and that the
universe is still expanding? Connecting to the
idea of an expanding universe is the intriguing
phenomenon known as the "cosmological
constant" which is a homogeneous energy
density that causes the expansion of the
universe to accelerate. If you love learning how
the universe works, this course will certainly get
you acquainted with some mind blowing
concepts and discoveries. There will also be an
excursion to the Planetarium for this course.

PEAC ONLINE COURSES ROUND TWO 2017
Commence Monday 29 May and finish Friday 18 August 2017.
The PEAC Online program offers courses to PEAC students who have trouble accessing courses at the regular PEAC Centres, or who prefer to learn in
a more independent and flexible manner. The online learning environment we use in PEAC Online is the same one used by the online secondary
selective program for country students.
By participating in an online PEAC course the students have the opportunity to:
 Develop specific course content outcomes from a variety of Learning Areas;
 Develop skills in personal self-management and using information and communication technologies to share their learning; and
 Work with other like-minded peers from across Western Australia in an innovative learning environment.
Students should be aware that it requires a good deal of self-discipline to complete an Online course and that the activities will be as challenging as,
if not more challenging than, those done in the regular PEAC classroom. At the same time, many find the courses great fun and enjoy working with their
online classmates.
Students need regular access to a reliable computer with the Internet and reasonably up to date programs in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. We encourage
classroom teachers to utilise the online courses as part of their provision for their gifted students, by allocating at least an hour of class time per week
for the students to work on their online course. This is flexible and can be negotiated between the classroom teacher and student.
The available online courses for this round are listed on the next page.

gives him a glass of water and then suddenly screams.” What possible
explanations are there?
What is it the more you take away, the larger it becomes?
If you love these and other types of lateral and logical thinking problems, and
enjoy a bit of brain gymnastics, then this is the course for you.
Are you a fan of James Bond? Have you ever wondered what it might be like to
spy for your country? In this course you will have revealed to you some of the
many skills of espionage, such as ciphers and codes, covert operations and
‘dead drops’. You will also research some famous spies in history and learn
about the ingenious echnology used by spies of yesterday and today.
The popular television program, “Mythbusters” is based on the concept of
exploring urban myths and investigating to see if they can be confirmed, seen
as plausible or completely busted”. You will examine a number of myths,
Develop your science investigation skills and select a myth you wish to study in
depth, set up the testing conditions to confirm or break those myths!
