AN EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF THE MGB RAPID FIELD ASSESSMENT
OF LANDSLIDE PRONE BARANGAYS OF SIARGAO, BUCAS GRANDE AND
MASAPELID ISLANDS, SURIGAO DEL NORTE
In fulfillment of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB)’s commitment to finish
the geohazard assessment of Caraga Region XIII, one (1) geologist, one (1) mining
engineer, and two (2) geologic assistants from the Geosciences Division of MGB
Region XIII conducted a rapid field assessment of landslide prone barangays in the
municipalities of Siargao, Bucas Grande and Masapelid Islands, Province of Surigao del
Norte intermittently for the 2nd semester of CY 2007. This activity is a continuation of the
rapid field assessment of landslide-prone barangays conducted by DENR-MGB
covering the mainland municipalities of the province last year.
The rapid field assessment focused on barangays that are located on footslopes,
mid slopes and mountain ridges. Each barangay was rated with low, moderate or high
landslide susceptibility. The rating parameters are as follows:
High
 Presence of active and/ or recent landslides
 Presence of numerous and large tension cracks that would directly affect the
community
 Areas with drainages that are prone to landslides damming
 Steep slopes
 Nearness to faults
Moderate
 Areas with indicative and/or old landslides
 Presence of small tension cracks and are located away from the community
 Moderate slopes
Low
 Low to gently sloping
 Absence of tension cracks
There are a total of one hundred (140) barangays assessed not only for landslide
occurrence but also for flooding susceptibility in some areas. The result of the MGB
Rapid Field Assessment is as follows:




40 barangays have a high landslide susceptibility;
17 barangays have a moderate landslide susceptibility;
10 barangays have a low landslide susceptibility; and
73 barangays have no/ none landslide susceptibility
The appropriate barangays were presented with a Landslide Threat Advisory. The
Advisory informs the barangays of their susceptibility to landslides and have the

corresponding recommendations particular to the barangay. The flood susceptible
barangays were also given suitable recommendation.
