HP Insight Dynamics - VSE Bradford Nichols, HP Enterprise Storage and Servers Abstract • • • Insight Dynamics – VSE 4.0 (ID-VSE) is the latest release in HP’s server virtualization management software. It combines the scope and maturity of previous Virtual Server Environment (VSE) offerings of Integrity Servers with integration into the latest capabilities of the popular Insight Control Environment of products for ProLiant Servers. This talk will provide an overview of the features in Virtual Server Environment product for ProLiant and Integrity Servers, and then include a demo of some of the significant new features in the ID-VSE 4.0 release; Support for a Windows CMS Virtualization Manager • Capacity Advisor • Logical Server – – – – Blade Enclosure, Virtual Connect Enterprise Manager and Virtual Machine Management support Consolidation scenario wizards Power awareness Rapid provisioning of Blade and VM contexts which can be easily moved within the available resource pool About the speaker • Bradford Nichols – Technical Consultant – HP Enterprise Storage and Servers – [email protected] HP Insight Dynamics – VSE Optimize server utilization in real time Bradford Nichols, HP September 2008 © 2008 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P. ( 1 of ) • What Operating Systems are supported with SMP-U? – The currently released version of SMP-U is 3.5. In this version the supported source system OSs are Windows variants, in the case of a VtoX the source VM hosts are VMware, Xen and MS Virtual Server. – The OS on the target server (if it exists) is not important because SMP provides a bootable image for its agent on the target. In the case of a migration to VM the supported target VM Hosts are VMware, Xen and MS Virtual Server. – For specific details, the quick spec for the v3.5 version of the product is online at http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12855_na/1 2855_na.html Questions? (2 of • Are integrity blades supported as logical servers? – In the current ID-VSE 4.0 release they are not. But the plan is to support them in the next release which is planned for Q109. See you can contact your HP rep for a formal NDA roadmap if you need more details. – Note that today Integrity Blades, HP-UX and HP Integrity Virtual Machines are fully supported in the Virtualization Manager and Capacity Advisor components of the ID-VSE 4.0 product Questions? (3 of • Can Capacity Advisor work for an all Dell installed base? – Used in an on-going fashion CapacityAdvisor is not intended for use with non-HP platforms. The licensing scheme is based on HP platforms and a platform-type check is made in the SIM CMS licensing mechanism when licenses are applied. – That being said, CapacityAdvisor does have some low-level mechanisms to import historical performance data that is in ascii format independent of any platform-type labeling. These could be used to do a one time import of historical for purposes of a consolidation project of non-HP platforms to HP servers. Typically in this case, the tool would be used by HP services as part of a project on behalf of a customer. If this is of further interest I suggest you contact me or the local HP services delivery contact in your area. Questions? (4 of • Can virtualization manager be utilized w/o SIM? – Virtualization Manager is only available as a plug in to SIM. The support SIM Server OS options are HPUX or x86 Windows. – Vman itself has no real dependencies in the Insight Control Suite other then SIM. So if you are concerned about a lot of complexity to set Vman up due to the Insight Suite’s size, it isn’t necessarily so. But Logical Servers requires VMM and VCEM. Also CapAd would utilizes VMM when gather information about VMware hosts. Questions? (5 of 5) • How would be an answer to customer's question - what VSE does offer which is not in Vmware's Vmotion/HA? – The short answer is ID-VSE is not a replacement for VMware and its features. – ID-VSE adds additional features to a customer’s ProLiant environment with VMware; • The ability to view and manage both physical and virtual aspects of your environment from a single interface (Virtualization Manager). From this tool integrated in SIM you get low-level server hardware characteristics and events right up through Virtual Machine visibility and control and everything in between. • An integrated full featured, directly accessible to the user capacity monitoring and planning tool – Capacity Advisor. The Capacity Advisor tool works for physical bare-iron server, vm host servers and vms. • The ability to “Virtualize” physical blades in an enclosure much in the same way as vms are virtualized on a vm host. This is done using ID-VSE logical servers. When blades are logical servers, they (their context or settings like SAN and MAC addresses) can be templated, assigned, moved, much like a Virtual Machine.
