Welcome!
Welcome, parents and guardians of the Class of 2020! When a
new student enrolls at Washington College, a family joins us,
too, and we’re delighted to welcome you to the Washington
College family.
We hope you will find the information in these slides useful.

additional information including links to the offices you may
need or want to contact while your student prepares for
Washington College.

First steps
After students have committed to enroll at Washington College:
 Visit the First Year website: www.washcoll.edu/new
 Students can join the class Facebook group: Washington College Class of 2020.
 Students receive a packet of information: The letter in that packet outlines
what students must do before Summer Advising.
 Students: complete and return housing forms; Parents/guardians: complete
and return Parent/Guardian Form.
 Students and parents/guardians attend Summer Advising.
 Students complete Summer Survey.
 Can’t come to Summer Advising? Students should contact Ms. Jennifer Schultz
at 410-778-7206 or [email protected] after June 27 for an appointment
for a phone advising session and plan to move in and attend Make-up Advising
on August 24
What happens next?
After students have attended Summer Advising and/or
registered for their Fall 2016 courses:
 They are assigned a faculty advisor; their advisor
assignment is posted on WebAdvisor.
 They are assigned to a peer mentor group which is their
group for New Student Orientation.
 They hear via email and Facebook from their peer mentor,
an upperclass student specially selected and trained to
mentor new students.
 They complete the Summer To-Do list.
What must students do over the summer?
The Summer To-Do list: Before students move in they must:
 Complete the first part of the “Think About It!” program online
 Complete the Technology Orientation online via Canvas

 Complete Focus 2, for the First Year Career Development
program
 Read “Ways to Disappear” by Idra Novey, the first year book
 Have their final high school transcript sent to the Washington
College Registrar’s Office.
Anything else to do over the summer?
Before students move in they should also (if applicable):
 Have official score reports of any Advanced Placement
scores of four or five sent to the Washington College
Registrar’s Office.
 Have transcripts of any previous college course credits sent
to the Washington College Registrar’s Office.
 Have official score reports of any other advanced standing
credits send to the Washington College Registrar’s Office.

How do I…?
 Learn about Family Educational Rights and Privacy
Act (FERPA): Go to https://www.washcoll.edu/families/
click on “Our Top Questions.”
 Know if my student has given permission for me to
know information from his/her educational records?
Ask your student to show you his/her FERPA status on
WebAdvisor.
 Get access to my student’s WebAdvisor account:
Students must give you access; students should log in to
WebAdvisor and click on “Add/Change Parental Access” to
give you access.

On your student’s WebAdvisor account, under “Financial
Aid.”
