Welcome
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the third annual USA Ultimate Beach Championships in Virginia Beach. USA Ultimate encompasses everything that is good about
athletic competition. It exemplifies the core values of sportsmanship, respect, integrity,
cooperation and self-discipline.
Our community partners, Virginia Beach Jaycees and George Alcaraz with Resort Management LLC, have been working diligently to create an enjoyable experience for you
while you are in beautiful Virginia Beach.
To all the athletes competing – the City of Virginia Beach wishes you success in displaying your abilities to the fullest. The sportsmanship, fair play and respect you demonstrate are major reason for the popularity of your sport.
When you are done competing, please get out and enjoy some of the best of what Virginia Beach has to offer. From award-winning coastal cuisine and family friendly attractions
to shopping and relaxing in the sand, Virginia Beach has something for everyone.
Please accept my best wishes for a great event!

EVENT INFO
Ultimate in 10 Simple Rules
1. THE FIELD: A rectangular shape with end zones at each end. A regulation field is 70
yards by 40 yards, with end zones 25 yards deep.
2. INITIATE PLAY: Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their
respective end zone line. The defense throws (“pulls”) the disc to the offense. A
regulation game has seven players per team.
3. SCORING: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense’s end zone, the
offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.
4. MOVEMENT OF THE DISC: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing
a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc
(“thrower”) has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower
(“marker”) counts out the stall count.
5. CHANGE OF POSSESSION: When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds,
drop, block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and
becomes the offense.
6. SUBSTITUTIONS: Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a
score and during an injury timeout.
7. NON-CONTACT: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens
are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
8. FOULS: When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul
disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player
committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.
9. SELF-OFFICIATING: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players
resolve their own disputes.
10. SPIRIT OF THE GAME: Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive
play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to
the rules, and the basic joy of play.

Coming from all walks of life, adding friends

In 1849, the Welsh Church organized “er mwyn cynal cymdeithas ysbrydol ac eglwysig yn ein hiaith
ein hunain yn y ddinas hon” - so that they could
meet spiritually as a Welsh language church in
Boston. By 1870, it spread to Cambridge and
Somerville. Passed down through the ancestry
of Tegan, Llewellyn and Iago were the sonorous
melodies of the crwth. The lavish tones of the instrument combined
with the local heartland fineries fused into a subtly harsher but undeniably handsome sound that took the town by storm. Passed along
from patron to patron, porch to porch, the genre became known as
the Somerville Crwth.
THE SUMMER OF
GEORGE
FAIRFAX, VA
Captains: Bryan Dombrowski, Eric Lu, Brian Leonard
Coach: Bryan Dombrowski
@sogUlti
The cause of the record high temperatures this
winter was none other than the birth of The Summer of George. What started as small talk between Ambiguously Gray practice players in their
candlelit weight room in the suburbs of Northern
Va. soon blossomed into reality. A collection of the
greatest players to ever don the green and gold for
George Mason Ultimate, coming together across generations with
one goal: to remind those Atlantic Coast kids that 14th seed aint
nothin’ to mess with. Unfortunately, most of those guys dropped.
In traditional Mason fashion, the remnants got innovative. They recruited some talented undergrads who’ve never seen a beach other
than Wildwood to fill the ranks. This younger new team has packed
their bags and is headed south, eager to make their mark on the
beach ultimate scene.

With a core of Cincinnati Steamboat’s club mixed

another return trip to the shores of the Atlantic.
Steamboat was formed in 2008 and is the Great

Over the years, shipmates have travelled extensively to play grass tournaments around the U.S.,
but in 2011, eager to test out our sea legs, we navigated uncharted
waters as Batello a Vapore to the harbors of Paganello and docked
there again in 2012. Now, with some new crew on board, we’re

CHAPEL HILL, NC
Captain: Beth Gifford
Coach: Beth Stagner
Carolina CottonMouth brings together players
from the North Carolina Triangle and Erin Crider—we don’t know how she ended up here, but
we’re glad she did. We’re older than your average
mixed team, but that’s mostly because we are invested in developing future masters players Neve,
Gallagher and Collar—hoping that when they get there, they will
still invite the rest of us to play. We’re looking forward to exerting
dominance through sick defensive switches and patient offense that
takes us to the time cap. Good luck competing against these proven
and hard-to-master strategies!

SPECTATOR INFO
Big Fish started as a group of players that
plays beach ultimate every summer on the
beautiful beaches of Cape Cod and wanted
to play in tournaments against some deserving competition. We now draw players
from Boston, Portland and other cities in the
northeast region who only wish they were spending their summer on
the Cape and are always welcome to visit. We are an enthusiastic,
competitive group that love beach ultimate and are hoping the sport
continues to grow to include more tournaments and a longer season.
Big Fish brings the Cape Cod spirit to Beach Nationals, bringing
classic Cape beach items along to share with our opponents after
a well-fought match.

FOG CITY
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
Captains: Jeff Voss, Alec Surmani
The lazy yawn of morning fog lolls its tongue over
The City, wrapping its sandy ultimate players in a
grey haze. Hucks go up to legs you hope belong
to a teammate, someone you can’t see passes you
something then hugs you, a disc drops out of the
dank haze like the moon itself and donks you in the dome. After playing at Ocean Beach for years, we knew there could only be one name
for a Bay Area beach team: Fog City. Started by Bay Area beach legend Bill Liu, we’re a team all about love, balling out with each other
and spreading the good vibes of the Bay to everyone.

Captain: Sarah Pesch
@TheDadLarsonEXP
If you couldn’t tell from the team’s name,
we’re a tribute to the best player ever to
graduate from Ames High School – the one,
the only...THE Kevin Seiler. Has he been running the length of the field longer than most
of us have known how to walk? Probably. Has
he been heckling longer than most of us have
known how to talk? Definitely. But he is still
the fearless leader of one of the best mixed
teams in the country. He is a world champion, a national champion,
a cheese lover and a local hero. He has coached or captained the
majority of this team and helped us all become better ultimate players. We’ll do our best to make you proud, Dad.

SPECTATOR INFO
Land Ho! Is comprised of a group of 15 complete strangers who first met in the state of
Missouri. The convoluted intersection and weave
of their lives would, together, culminate in not
only friendships but also landmark accomplishments, including but not limited to: bearing the
riches of Patagonia1 in 2013, summiting Everest2 in 2014 and surfing the Amazon3 in 2015.
However, as with all wildly successful groups4, infighting and largerthan-life personalities broke up the group. In 2017, the group was
asked to reunite for a one-time reunion tour in Virginia Beach. This
has provided a platform for the members of Land Ho! to heal and
grow, because friends shouldn’t judge each other. They should judge
other people, together.

Northern Virginia has an outstanding reputation for ultimate and
a vast range of competitive levels. Lord Fairfax’ is a mixed bag of
people from all different pedigrees. Our team consists of high school
players; young people new to the sport; college players from George
Mason, Mary Washington, Northern Virginia CC and more; as well as
middle-aged folk. We also have middle and high school coaches who
pave the way for the younger generation. Although we mostly play
on the turf field of the college campus, we have been seen playing
in public parks and on high school fields. We have even attempted scrimmages and practiced layouts on the local sand volleyball
courts. Since ultimate is prevalent in our neck of the woods, it is
easy to attract people to the new terrain and play on the sand, even
though we lack the sufficient landscape.

HOUSTON, TX
Captains: Sean McCall, Katey Forth
No Tsu Oh originated in 2000 as a reunion team of the Houston
Houndz and Doublewide to attend Paganello in Italy. The team won
the World Beach Ultimate Cup five times on the Rimini beach before
retiring the name in 2008. Since then, a core team has been playing
offseason tourneys together in the mixed division to set the stage for
NTO’s return to the sand, this time in the mixed division and with the
power of Showdown’s finest. No Tsu Oh has initiated beach league
games in Galveston and locally in Houston on sand volleyball courts.

SWAMP CITY
WASHINGTON, DC
Captains: Jacob Nuxoll, Grace Relf
Coach: Lilly Siems
On January 20, 2017, when the swamp in D.C. began to drain,
strange and powerful creatures rose from the muck and the mire.
These creatures came together and formed the team known as
Swamp City. These semi-aquatic creatures cannot bear to be far
from the water and thus only come together to play on the beach. The
team’s goal is to show that, though built on a swamp, not everything
out of Washington is a monster.

Just a bunch of ladies trying to get filthy rich
by toeing the line with some nasty bids. Our
squad from Richmond is here to win some
games with some dirty layouts (our white

money hammers to the back corners of the end zones and drop dimes
to our deep cutters. We take all this to the bank, and just like our
marks, we know how to get around. We’re not just wolves on Wall

Foxx is in its inaugural year of play and hails from Peterborough,

goal of wanting to play women’s ultimate. With very few local options
available, we decided to start our own team. Foundationally, we want
foxx to be a team filled with positive energy, good people who are
committed to being the best players they can be while supporting
their teammates to do the same and playing this sport we all love.
We share a vision of wanting to see women play “untraditional roles,”
become leaders on the field and be provided the opportunity to become the players we know they can be. We’re here to develop, learn,

SPECTATOR INFO
The Rockford Beaches are a women’s professional beach team with a storied history.
The Beaches competed in all 12 years of
the All-American Girls Professional Beach
League, winning in 1945, 1948, 1949 and 1950. After a short hiatus,
the Beaches donned their uniforms again at the USAU Beach Championships, taking third in 2015 and bringing the pennant home to the
Upper Midwest in 2016.

Despite the recent retirement of Dottie Hinson, “All-the-Way” Mae
Mordabito and Marla Hooch, this ragtag crew of Midwestern swingers will dazzle you with their heavy hitting and curveballs. Although
we rarely throw home on a two-run lead and still can’t lay off the
high ones, we absolutely know “there’s no crying in beach ultimate!”
We’re the members of the All-American League. We come from cities
near and far. We’ve got Madisonians, Indy ones and Swedes. We’re all
for one, we’re one for all, we’re all American!

@PBNJultimate
Sea Sick is a compilation of spirited players from New Jersey that
loves to play hard, empower each other on the field and exists to
play with our whole hearts. We range from the ages of 20 to 33 and
all stumbled upon one another at hat tournaments, during our club
season or at our respective colleges. A majority of us play on the first
New Jersey women’s club team and are amped to show our skills in
the sand. We are so stoked to have the opportunity to play against the
other women’s teams in our division and hope to learn more about
ourselves as players and each other as a team.

The Collective is made up of women from the Atlantic Provinces
of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Formed in 2012, this women’s team brought together ladies that
wanted to compete at a higher level and combined the talent of the
Atlantic women into one strong force. The Collective has competed
previously in the Boston Invite and the USAU Triple Crown Tour Series
and is made up of not only experience and skill, but also athleticism
and grit. The Collective put together their masters-age players to
compete at last year’s CUCs in Winnipeg where they placed third.
Collectively, the Atlantic women are a force to be reckoned with!

CHARGE! was formed 15 years ago to give a core
group of long standing coed teammates a reason to play in the sand in the summer. It was a
welcome chance to take off our cleats, soak up
some sun and enjoy competitive disc in a new
way. Several players on the squad now ONLY appear on the horizon when beach ultimate is on
the menu, preferring to never layout on turf again. Our roster has
changed somewhat over the years, but the core members and spirit
of CHARGE! still remain strong. Carefully crafted, like your favorite
cocktail, Charge! is assembled each year with equal parts of talent and friendship. We pride ourselves on high-spirited, competitive
play; happily heckling our own players as a means of team discipline.
We encourage this spirit of play in our opponents as well, ending
each game with a ceremony that recognizes the standout players on
the opposing squad.

Love Handles formed in Boston in 2011 to
compete in local tournaments and in the local BUDA club scene. We didn’t really find
our calling as a club team until we sent two
teams to Wildwood and had a great time. Even after Love Handles
stopped playing on grass, we continue to play beach ultimate including Wildwood and Lei Out in 2016. While a lot of the players from this
team are new to Love Handles, many of us have played together on
other USAU summer club teams or in the local Boston hat leagues.
There is a large masters-level group in Boston, and we hope to establish a consistent presence at Nationals!

Shostakovich (and the Angry Buddha) is
delighted to be returning to the third-ever
USAU Beach Championships as well as the
third-ever USAU mixed masters competition. Originally founded nearly a decade ago
to fulfill Taylor Richey’s dream of winning
the Ow, My Knee tournament in Albany (goal
yet to be accomplished – perhaps at the
33nd annual this summer), Shostakovich
draws players from a wide spectrum of club
teams. Our unifying (if sometimes tenuous) connection is to pick-up
in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, a game dating back to the early 1990s
that fosters competition from high school through great grand masters ages. While our Angry Buddha has retired (at least for now), we
look forward to channeling his admirable blend of intense competitiveness and embodiment of the spirit of the game to Virginia Beach.

Ye Olde Boxcar started as a few players from the
mixed club team named Boxcar (go figure) started to get old. Well, old enough to play masters,
that is. Boxcar has a tradition of inviting friends
to play with them at select tournaments…and
since we couldn’t field a full team of old folks,
this was the perfect time to join together with friends again! To
the Boxcar core, we added old college buddies, new tournament
friends, some sand volleyball players (they should be good on the
beach right?) and some random guy we met on the streets (maybe).
Though we’ve never all played together, each of us has played with
at least one other person on the team at some point. We’re here to
play well, have fun and make some new friends along the way –
perhaps new friends that will join our team one day!

Borderline is a men’s masters and grand masters club team from the
Atlantic Region (Ultimate Canada)/Northeast Region (USA Ultimate)
that was conceived in 2011 by a collection of Canadian Maritime
and Maine players. The original core group played on various men’s
and mixed teams and developed friendships over the decades from
competing against one another. Initially, Borderline competed as a
men’s masters team. We competed in the USAU club series in 20112013, earning a bid to U.S. Nationals in 2013. In 2014 and 2015, we
focused on the Canadian Ultimate Championship, winning Canadian
Nationals in 2014. The team grew rapidly as new players came of
age, and in 2016, we formed a grand masters team.

SPECTATOR INFO
The Coney Island Fun House represents all that is
good about the Brooklyn beach. Coney Island is
home to the Cyclone, the Wonder Wheel and the
Hot Dog Eating Contest. But it’s more than thrill
rides and non-Kosher gluttony, it’s about strolling
the boardwalk to play the occasional game of skill
and amaze at the strong man and the Siamese twin. The beach is a
respite for hard working immigrants to cool from the summer heat.
And like the beachgoers, we’re a team made up of players from far
and wide – New York, Pittsburgh, D.C. and Connecticut. None of us
are from Coney Island. But together, we are a FUN HOUSE!

GRAVE ERROR
CHAPEL HILL, NC
Captain: Jacob Bonenberger
Grave Error is the result of all the other team’s
bad personnel decisions. We are the fodder, the
chaff, the slivers of greatness you left on the cutting room floor while forming your perfect rosters.
These forgotten souls have gathered together with
one goal in mind - to seek redemption by burying
the competition in this sandy graveyard. The signs will be subtle.
When it feels like a hand is reaching out of the sand as you slip and
faceplant, know that it is our hand. When the wind pops that disc up
into your face instead of your fingers, know that it is our collective
breath. And when a hand pats you on the back in that particularly
sunburnt spot, well that will be us too, congratulating you on a great
game and reminding you of your Grave Error.

Sandblast is essentially a melting pot of former
teammates and foes from the Midwest. The sands
of time have passed, but we have reformed to
compete again as Sandblast. Sandblasting “is
the operation of forcibly propelling a stream of
abrasive material against a surface under high pressure to smooth
a rough surface.” Some of our players are abrasive material, some
are a stream of high pressure and some have just been worn down.

Spirit Of The Game
Ultimate has traditionally relied upon the spirit of sportsmanship, which places the
responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never
at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed upon rules
of the game, or the basic joy of play. — 11th Edition USA Ultimate Rules of Ultimate.
10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
ABOUT SPIRIT OF THE GAME™
1. THE GOLDEN RULE: TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD WANT TO BE TREATED.
Spirited games result from mutual respect among opponents. Assume the best of your
opponent. Give him or her the benefit of a doubt. You would want the same for yourself.
But if you are thick-skinned, do not assume that your opponent is. Maybe you should
think of this rule as, “treat others as you would have them treat your mother.”
2. CONTROL: SOTG TAKES REAL EFFORT.
SOTG is not just some abstract principle that everyone adopts and then games run
smoothly without effort. Close calls are made in tight games. Hard fouls are committed.
SOTG is about how you handle yourself under pressure: how you contain your emotionality,
tame your temper, and modulate your voice. If you initiate or contribute to the unraveling
of spirit, the concept falls apart quickly. If you act to mend things (or at least not
exacerbate the situation) by following (1) above, the game heals itself.
3. HECKLING AND TAUNTING ARE DIFFERENT.
Ultimate has a long tradition of good-natured heckling. Heckles are friendly barbs,
typically from non-playing spectators. Heckling can be fun, but taunting is unspirited and
wrong. Harassing remarks after an opponent’s foul call or close play are NOT heckling:
they are abusive taunts which create unpleasant playing conditions and often escalate to
acrimonious disputes.
4. SOTG IS COMPATIBLE WITH CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY.
It is a fallacy to argue that the stakes are so important that some aspect of SOTG can be
cast aside. Time and again, great teams and star players have shown that you can bring
all your competitive and athletic zeal to a game without sacrificing fair play or respect
for your opponent.
5. DON’T “GIVE AS YOU GOT.”
There is no “eye for an eye.” If you are wronged, you have no right to wrong someone in
return. In the extreme case where you were severely mistreated, you may bring the issue
up with a captain, tournament director, or even lodge a complaint with the governing
body. If you retaliate in kind, however, a complaint may be filed against you. We recall
point (1): treat others as you would have them treat you, not as they have treated you. In
the end, you are responsible for you.
2017 USA ULTIMATE BEACH CHAMPIONSHIPS
6. BREATHE.
After a hard foul, close call, or disputed play, take a step back, pause, and take a deep
breath. In the heat of competition, emotions run high. By giving yourself just a bit of
time and space, you will gain enough perspective to compose yourself and concentrate
on the facts involved in the dispute (was she in or out; did you hit his hand or the disc;
did that pick affect the play). Your restraint will induce a more restrained response
from your opponent. Conflagration averted, you may resume business as usual.
7. WHEN YOU DO THE RIGHT THING, PEOPLE NOTICE.
When you turn the other cheek, you know you’ve done the right thing. You may not
hear praise, there may be no standing ovation, but people do notice. Eventually, their
respect for you and their appreciation of the game will grow.
8. BE GENEROUS WITH PRAISE.
Compliment an opponent on his/her good catch. Remark to a teammate that you
admire their honesty in calling themselves out of bounds. Look players in the eye and
congratulate them when you shake their hands after a game. These small acts boost
spirit greatly, a large payoff for little time and effort.
9. IMPRESSIONS LINGER.
Not only does the realization that your actions will be remembered for a long time
serve to curb poor behavior, it can also inspire better conduct. Many old-timers enjoy
the experience of meeting an elite player who remembers their first rendezvous on the
field and recalls the event in detail. A good first encounter with an impressionable
young player can have considerable long term positive impact.
All other things being equal, games are far more fun without the antipathy. Go hard.
Play fair. Have fun.

Spirit Circles
Spirit circles are an idea borrowed from international competitions throughout the
ultimate world. For years, American teams have traveled to world championship events
where they have not only done exceptionally well in each competition, but showed the
international community the importance we place on respect for the game and their
opponents. But American players have also learned a lot from competing against teams
from other countries, and invariably one of the most positive parts of the international
experience has been the tradition of the post-game spirit circles. While there are a number
of ways to do this, here are some quick tips to get your team started:
-F
ollowing each game, rather than lining up to slap hands, the two teams gather into a
circle, alternating players on each team, facing inward, with arms around the shoulders
of the person next to you.
-O
ne or two people (often team captains) on each team will talk briefly about the game.
Usually the losing team goes first, then the winning team.
-T
hings to talk about can include how the game went, how your own team played, what
the other team did well, who on the other team played well and anything else that might
be worth communicating, even if it’s something you think could be done better (and
don’t forget to look in the mirror on this).
-A
fter each team has had a chance to talk, the winning team takes a step into the circle
and walks around counter-clockwise to slap hands with the players on the other team.
That’s it! It’s pretty simple and definitely something that brings teams together and puts
the game and the experience in perspective. It’s all about respect for each other and the
experience of bringing out the best in each other through competition. It’s also about
building relationships and seeing opponents for what they really are: part of the same
community that loves ultimate. Please note that this is not required and is not meant to
replace other post-game traditions you may have (e.g., cheers, games, photos, gifts or
trading gear). Good luck, and please let USA Ultimate staff and other event organizers
how it goes!
2017 USA ULTIMATE BEACH CHAMPIONSHIPS
Health and Safety
Medical staff, including athletic trainers, will be on site at Tournament Central to treat injuries,
handle emergencies and provide some preventative care. The event will provide standard athletic
tape, pre-wrap, ice and some bandages. Other supplies, including special tape or bandages and
anti-inflammatory drugs, must be provided by teams or may be charged by the training staff.
If there is an injury on a field that needs medical attention, inform a field marshal, and he or
she will radio to the trainers.
If you have medical issues that require attention in the morning before play, please show up
early to avoid long lines. The trainers will be at the fields two hours prior to game time each day.
CONCUSSIONS
EDUCATION
•U
SA Ultimate recommends the CDC “Heads Up Safety” program, a free one-hour online
training: cdc.gov/concussion/headsup/youth.html.
•U
SA Ultimate’s participant waiver includes important information from the CDC regarding
concussion safety: usaultimate.org/membership/usa_ultimate_membership_forms.aspx
COACHING REQUIREMENTS
•C
oaches at USA Ultimate events are required to have completed a concussion awareness and
safety recognition program (like the CDC program above or other local or state-recommended
course).Coaches should not submit records of course completion to USA Ultimate, but should
maintain records on-site while coaching.
REMOVAL & RETURN TO PLAY
•A
ll guidelines identified by the CDC must be strictly followed in the event of a suspected
concussion.
1. Remove athlete from play.
2. Ensure athlete is evaluated by a health care professional trained in concussion diagnosis
and management.
Do not try to judge the seriousness of the injury yourself.
3. If a minor, inform athlete’s parents or guardians about the known or possible concussion
and give them the fact sheet on concussion.
4. Allow athlete to return to play only with permission from an appropriate health care
professional.
DOCTOR’S NOTE REQUIREMENT
• If, during a USA Ultimate event, an athlete receives care at a hospital, medical clinic or
doctor’s office, or is referred to a hospital or doctor by event medical staff, the athlete is barred
from further competition in that event until he or she provides a doctor’s note, on letterhead
or prescription pad, to event medical staff stating that the athlete is authorized to return to
competition.
HEAT, NUTRITION AND HYDRATION
•H
eat-related illness occurs when body cooling by evaporation is limited. Sweating depletes
the body’s salt and moisture, which leads to dehydration. If a player recognizes any signs or
symptoms of heat-related illness, he or she should treat the problem immediately.
•S
igns and symptoms of heat illness can include changes in level of consciousness, abdominal
cramps, nausea/vomiting, fatigue/tingling, chills, inability to spit, dry mucous membranes,
decreased output and change in color of urine.
2017 USA ULTIMATE BEACH CHAMPIONSHIPS
PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF HEAT ILLNESS
•A
void alcohol, caffeine and carbonated beverages.
•M
edications such as antihistamines, decongestants, certain asthma medications and
diuretics can increase risk for heat illness. Avoid them if possible.
•A
void certain nutritional supplements (such as caffeine and ephedrine) that can
dehydrate the body and/or increase metabolism and heat production.
•K
now your body – be honest! Are you fit enough to perform under current conditions?
•E
at and drink (water AND sports drinks) optimally before, during and after play.
Potassium is important; good sources include sports drinks, yogurt, grapefruit juice,
bananas and oranges. Sodium is also important; good sources include sports drinks,
vegetable juices, pretzels, nuts, cheese and crackers. After play, carbohydrates are
important: foods such as potatoes, honey, cereal, white bread, corn chips, sports drinks,
jelly beans, rice cakes, bagels, crackers and gummy candies.
•D
on’t drink too much. Over-hydrating can be dangerous if it leads to a fluid and
electrolyte imbalance.
•M
onitor your urine. Clear/copious = hydrated. Dark = Need water/electrolytes.
•B
e sensitive to prior illness. If you’ve been sick, your body may be more susceptible to
dehydration.
•R
est and cool down after play. Find shade, wet the skin, get in front of a fan or breeze.
SIDELINE SAFETY
•S
pectators and equipment must stay at least five yards away from the sidelines. Where
there are buffer lines, respect them. Chairs, coolers, strollers, you, etc., must be at least
three yards from the sidelines.
• If a player believes that an object on the sideline is not safe, he or she should inform
event staff and refrain from playing until he or she is satisfied that safe conditions have
been established.
LIGHTNING GUIDELINES
•E
vent staff will communicate with players and spectators via PA system and through field
marshals equipped with radios if there is lightning danger. Play then will be stopped,
and everyone should seek shelter.
•S
afe shelter for players and spectators at the field site includes any fully enclosed
building or vehicle with a hard top and closed windows.
•E
vent staff will use the “flash-to-bang” method to determine when to send people to
shelter. By the time the flash-to-bang count has reached 30 seconds, all individuals
should be in a safe shelter location.
• If you can’t get to a safe shelter, try to avoid being the tallest object in an open field
or on open water. Avoid other tall objects, metal objects and water. Assume a crouched
position with only the balls of your feet touching the ground, your arms wrapped around
your knees and your head lowered. Minimize contact with the ground. Do not lie flat.
•A
void using telephone land lines. Cell phones are safe, provided the person has followed
other safety guidelines.
•E
vent staff will indicate to players when play is going to resume. Team captains should
meet at Tournament Central to receive instructions for resuming play and any schedule
modifications.
