BUILDING UPDATE: As you would have seen all our old classrooms have finally been taken away! Over the next couple of weeks the site will be cleared, soil tested and a new top layer of soil brought in. Footings, etc. will commence shortly and we’ll see a couple of large concrete slabs poured over the next few weeks. Our new Foundation, 1 and 2 building is still scheduled to be completed by the end of November, ready for our new 2018 Foundation students, whilst the Year 3 and 4 classrooms and Art room are due for completion at the end of January 2018. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for good weather!! RIDE FOR HOPE: Congratulations to all our Parkhill students who participated in this year’s Ride for Hope on Saturday. Through their cupcake stall, garage sale and other donations, these kids raised over $1,000. They then hit the track on Saturday with so much enthusiasm - they knew they were doing something good and helping people less fortunate than themselves. We have an awesome community here at Parkhill! Ride For Hope this year has raised over $180,000 so far with the event still to happen in two cities. They are optimistic that we will beat their total from last year of $513,000. Year 6 Inquiry: Immigration I was blown away last week when I sat in on the immigration stories our Year 6 students were privileged to hear about from 4 different members from our community who had immigrated to Australia. The stories gave a powerful insight into the complexities of the issues surrounding this fascinating topic. Houman Houman’s story was an emotional tale that gave us an insight into what it would be like for a ten year old to have to leave his family home in the middle of the night and travel through the desert to find freedom and safety. It made me feel lucky to live in a country where I can feel safe and come and go as I please. By Miakoda Agatha Agatha migrated from Malta to Australia in 1957 as a young child. She came by ship with her parents and seven siblings. The family chose Australia as their destination because our government was looking for skilled migrants to populate the country. They were to be given a house and a job but instead they were sent to Bonegila, a migrant hostel. I was surprised that the first house they owned in Australia was a two bedroom house, one room for her parents and one for the eight children. By Ashleigh Didi Didi migrated from Thailand to Australia in 2008 after she had met her husband, an Australian working in Thailand. Didi found it hard to get used to the cold Melbourne weather and was surprised that Melbourne was full of Thai culture. It made her feel closer to home that she could buy familiar food here. Didi often travels home to visit her family. By Mozhda Kay Kay migrated from England to Australia in 1948 with her parents and 2 siblings just after the Second World War. The family were in search of a happier life and were sponsored by friends that had already settled in Australia. They lived together on a farm in Maffra until her father had earned enough money to set out on his own. Her story highlighted that having friends and family around can make any move easier. By Patrice In wishing all our mums a relaxing and enjoyable Mother’s Day on Sunday, I would like to conclude this week by sharing a story with you that I recently received from a parent. Toby lost his watch a few days ago. It was a special gift from mum and dad, all the way from Singapore. We searched high and low, asked around, told his teacher, asked at the office, but nothing. I wasn't upset so much about it going missing as the thought that perhaps someone may have taken it for themselves. I hoped this wouldn't be the case. Well today, my faith in the children of Parkhill was upheld and I couldn't be happier. Miss Slaughter told Toby's class that he'd lost his watch and asked them to keep an eye out for it. Julia mentioned she may have seen it at OSH Club. I rang them this afternoon. They had it! Isaac had found it and handed it into the leaders of OSH Club. Toby was thrilled and went straight away to pick it up. We have a number of stories like this at Parkhill and reminds us of how great our kids and community really are! Have a great weekend Rod McKinlay Principal Donations—Should anyone be doing a clean out at home we would appreciate donations of Toy Cars for our games club.
