EQ: How do river systems
work?
Objective: EEn.2.3.2.C.
Explain how river systems
work using the following
terms: river basins, aquifers,
and watersheds. .
FINAL EXAM
By the end of today’s lesson you will be able to correctly
answer the following question:
What are the similarities and
differences between a river basin
and watershed?
INPUT
Before watching the clip:
1.
How do floods occur?
2.
What damage do floods create?
After watching the clip:

What is a
river basin?
PORTION OF LAND DRAINED
BY A RIVER AND ITS
TRIBUTARIES (BRANCHES)
INCLUDES ALL OF THE LAND
SURFACE DISSECTED AND
DRAINED BY MANY STREAMS
AND CREEKS THAT FLOW
DOWNHILL INTO ONE
ANOTHER, AND EVENTUALLY
INTO ONE RIVER

What is a
watershed?
A WATERSHED IS
USED TO DESCRIBE A
SMALLER AREA OF
LAND THAT DRAINS
TO A SMALLER
STREAM, LAKE, OR
WETLAND
When does a
flood occur?
WHEN THE DISCHARGE OF A
STREAM BECOMES SO GREAT
THAT IT EXCEEDS THE CAPACITY
OF ITS CHANNEL AND
OVERFLOWS ITS BANK
DISCHARGE = VELOCITY (V) X
DEPTH OF THE WATER (D) X
WIDTH OF THE WATER (W)
What causes
floods?
RAPID SPRING SNOW
MELT OR STORM
BRING HEAVY RAINS
OVER A LARGE
REGION
How do streams
erode their
channels?
THEY LIFT LOSE
PARTICLES BY
ABRASION AND BY
DISSOLVING
PARTICLES
DISSOLVED VERSUS SUSPENDED
MODEL
DISSOLVED LOAD
-enters streams through ground water
-load amount depends on geography, climate and setting
Suspended Load
- where the largest particles are carried
- How sand, silt, and clay are carried
- Suspended load increases during floods
TURBIDITY
-The cloudiness or haziness of fluid caused by individual particles
Can turbidity be used to describe dissolved or
suspended loads?
- Yes, turbidity can be used to describe both a
dissolved and suspended particles/solids
Using the annotated text about river basins
and watersheds, make a compare & contrast
graphic organizer

FINAL EXAM
By the end of today’s lesson you will be able to correctly answer
the following question:
What are the similarities and differences
between a river basin and watershed?
Both river basins and watersheds are areas of land that drain to a
particular water body, such as a lake, stream, river or estuary. In a river
basin, all the water drains to a large river. The term watershed is used to
describe a smaller area of land that drains to a smaller stream, lake or
wetland. There are many smaller watersheds within a river basin.
