A new hip. A new knee. A new life. Virtua Joint Replacement Institute When every move is filled with pain, it’s time to take the next big step. Getting out of bed takes five painful minutes. The stairs feel like a climb up Mount Everest. Golf, skiing, gardening, travel and picking up anything heavier than a small grocery bag is off limits. Forget about walking the dog or cruising the mall. You and your physician have tried exercise and oral medications, injections and massage to no end. You may be 40, 60 or 80, but your hip or knee feels 100 years old, and now you know you must take action. The question is: Where do you go and who do you trust to perform this life-changing surgery? Consider these questions before making this important decision. Q How dedicated is the institution to hip and knee replacement? The answer should be 100 percent. At Virtua’s Joint Replacement Institute, hip and knee replacements are the only procedures performed. The Institute is a state-of-the-art surgical facility staffed by fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons, orthopedic surgical nurses, and orthopedic physical therapists. It offers among the most scientifically advanced operating suites and recovery areas, as well as its own physical therapy unit. All rooms are private and filled with natural light. Each room has a private bath, flat screen television, internet access and a comfortable sitting area and sofa bed for a loved one to stay. The Institute is devoted to joint replacement in every aspect of care. 1-855-VIRTUA-3 | GotMyLifeBack.org 3 Virtua Joint Replacement Institute Q Back in the saddle “within eight weeks of surgery.” Anne loves horseback riding. Unfortunately, the pain in her knee was getting worse and she feared that she might not be able to ride anymore. She went to the Virtua Joint Replacement Institute for a minimally invasive, quad-sparing knee replacement. Eight weeks after surgery, she was holding the reins, riding pain free. Patient results may vary. 4 Can your surgeon use a quad-sparing technique to replace your knee? More than a decade ago, Scott Schoifet, MD, medical director of the Virtua Joint Replacement Institute, became one of the first surgeons in the country to offer patients a revolutionary quadriceps sparing technique. Using this procedure, a three-to-five-inch incision is made, and the quadriceps tendon, the largest in the body, is moved aside and not cut. Using specially designed tools, the Institute’s highly skilled surgeons are able to achieve proper alignment of the prosthesis. Dr. Schoifet has trained surgeons from around the world in this breakthrough minimally invasive quad-sparing technique. Q Is there enough experience using the minimally invasive quad-sparing approach? Dr. Schoifet and his team have been utilizing this approach for more than 12 years and have performed over 8,000 surgeries. Patients are able to walk the day of surgery and start rehabilitation immediately. While most patients stay one night and go home the day after surgery, some are actually able to go home the same day. Most patients get back to a desk job three to five weeks after surgery, and most resume normal activity within six weeks. Patient results may vary. Q What minimally invasive hip replacement procedures are available? The Institute performs minimally invasive hip replacement surgery including direct anterior and mini-posterior approaches. With these procedures, the surgeon does not cut through the large muscle surrounding the hip, so there is less trauma to the body. Choosing which type of hip replacement procedure is optimal is a decision you and your surgeon will make together. Q “Feeling 16 again” How satisfied are the Institute’s patients? Virtua is known for its high level of personal care. From your initial consultation through rehabilitation, your Virtua team will help you get back on your feet fast. The Virtua Joint Replacement Institute consistently achieves the 99th percentile in patient satisfaction scores, the highest possible rating.* According to this national survey, Virtua patients are so extremely satisfied with their experience that they would enthusiastically recommend knee or hip replacement surgery at the Institute to others. Patient Satisfaction HCAHPS* *Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey is a standardized survey developed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. 99 % In spite of three arthroscopic surgeries for a torn meniscus, at age 70, John Dower, couldn’t do a lot of things because the pain in his knees was just too much. “I couldn’t stand for a long time and I couldn’t walk without limping,” he says. After his wife had minimally invasive, quad-sparing knee replacement at Virtua, and was back to work in three weeks, John said, “I want to go where she went.” After having his own replacements done at Virtua, John “can dance all night. I can do anything.” Patient results may vary. 1-855-VIRTUA-3 | GotMyLifeBack.org 5 Virtua Joint Replacement Institute Q “Nothing’s going to stop me from working ... or working out.” David was 44 when an X-ray showed his hip had deteriorated to that of a 70-year-old man. The pain was interfering with his construction job and his passion for fitness. David had minimally invasive hip surgery at Virtua. He says, “I was walking with a cane in two weeks. My first day back at work, I rode my bike. It’s about a 4-mile ride. Nobody could believe I could do that.” Who will guide you through the surgical process?
