Session 202: Allen Moore, Director of Worldwide Executive

Session 202: Allen Moore, Director of Worldwide Executive Coaching Services, PDI-Ninth
House
Session Title: Developing Leadership in an Age of Complexity
Session Description:
How can we best develop leaders to guide the post-modern workforce – one that must sense,
interpret, respond, and adapt to the rapidly changing environment? In addition to the traditional
goals of economic gain and efficiency, leaders in today’s more global organizations must also
incorporate sustainability, meaning-making, and survival into their desired outcomes. Within a
volatile, uncertain, ambiguous, and highly complex era, leaders cannot continue to follow the
rigid command-and-control structures and behaviors that were established during the stable
post-war era. Neither can we, as practitioners, effectively evaluate, coach, and develop leaders
using the classic quantitative and behaviorist competencies that define most leadership models.
How do we accelerate the development of successful individual and collective leadership in the
complex adaptive systems of the postmodern work world? This session will explore situated
learning and development methods that seek to answer that question.
Speaker Bio:
Allen Moore heads the global practice area in executive coaching with PDI-Ninth House, a wellknown talent strategy and leadership development organization. Allen designs and delivers

Healthcare. In the 15 years following that, he has worked with 5 consulting firms across more
than 25 countries, and trained over 10,000 participants. Allen is currently writing his PhD
dissertation in social constructionism on the topic of complexity and emergent leadership.

Session 403: David Carmichael, VP of Operations, Handshaw, Inc.
Session Title: Real Project Management for Training Professionals
Session Description:
In this day of doing more with less, managing the training deliverables during a project is often
left to the lead designer or another designer who is asked to pitch in. As seasoned training
professionals, we know this is a possibility, so why let it catch us off guard? By applying
lessons learned from previous projects, designers or project managers can take on this task
with great confidence that they’re ready for the inevitable curveballs.
Project management is so much more than schedules, budgets, and status. It is a mindset
informed by years and years of seeing the same project sponsor mistakes, system delays, and
resulting deadlines missed. The key is to learn from those experiences, adapt from them, and
incorporate them into your "shadow" project plan. In this informative and interactive session,
David will share stories of how he faced down the deadline and ultimately prevailed victoriously.
Speaker Bio:
As Vice President of Operations with Handshaw, David manages the allocation of Handshaw's
production resources across as many as 20 concurrent projects. He oversees the operations
budget and works as part of the Handshaw executive committee to direct strategic initiatives
and company goals. He has kept Handshaw's production resources billed to capacity, achieving
the company’s highest level of growth in 10 years.
David has served Handshaw in a variety of roles including Performance Consultant,
Instructional Designer, and Project Leader. He operated as lead on the single highest grossing
project in the company’s history, serving as a consultant to the client and manager of the
production resources. He holds a MEd in Instructional Systems Technology from UNC
Charlotte and an MBA from Mississippi State University.
Session 401: Ed Muzio, CEO, Group Harmonics
Session Title: Surviving Complexity: Working More Hours Isn’t the Answer
Session Description:
We all owe our time and energy to many workplace masters. We juggle analysis, customer
service, supervision, time management, strategic planning, problem solving, and more, working
tirelessly on an infinite knot of interrelated problems and issues. We sense we are spread too
thin – that our complex workload is somehow impossible – so we work more hours to get the
same output. But our hours are finite, and our lives not our own.
Join us as award-winning author Ed Muzio shares real solutions that you can use yourself, and
with your clients, in an interactive, multimedia session. Define your purpose, stay on track, and
– best of all – go from surviving the hectic culture around you to influencing it. You’ll leave with
a new conceptual understanding of what may have previously seemed like a disjointed role, and
you might even get reenergized about your work in the process.

Session 301: Jane Bozarth, eLearning Coordinator, State of NC and Author
Session Title: Social Media for Trainers
Session Description:
Effective use of social media technologies can help to enhance and extend workplace training
and learning efforts. With much of the current talk on social media and social learning occurring
at the 50,000-foot level, training and learning professionals report that it offers few ideas for
application to their work. This session takes a 100-foot view of concrete, specific uses for using
social media tools to enhance and extend existing training programs. While it primarily
addresses use of Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Blogs, and Wikis (including some discussion of
private, alternatives), the emphasis is on recognizing any new social media tool at its root
purpose --and application to training endeavors-- rather than at face value.

Session 101: Jane Mitchell Howard, Co-Founder and Managing Director for Programs, Center
for Applied Cognitive Studies (CentACS)
Session Title: Does Your Training Stick Like Velcro? How to Assure that Training Transfers
Session Description:
Organizations spend money, a lot of money annually, on training initiatives, expecting
immediate change and improved performance from employees. As a result, trainers are
constantly trying to add tools, techniques, and pizazz to classroom and online programs so that
people will “get it,” that they will walk away with content and use it going forward.
Yet, research tells us that before training, we need to pause and examine the readiness of
potential trainees and coach their managers who are sending them to us in order to assure that
our training actually sticks and transfers to the trainees’ jobs. During this interactive session, we
will examine five readiness levels in two ways, 1) how each level links to a person’s existing
competency performance and 2) how much natural personality trait energy a person contains to
support their performance. Lastly, we will identify strategies for addressing each of the five
levels.
Speaker Bio:

for Applied Cognitive Studies (CentACS), established in 1986. Currently, Jane divides her time

audience will not soon forget. Such persuasive presentations can reduce employee’s time to
