Introduction
•
Packed column it is very important process in chemical engineering.
•
Packed bed is a hollow tube, pipe, or other vessel that is filled with
a packing material.
• there are tow types of packing:
1) Random packing
•
2) structured packing
Random packing has a many types like ( raschig rings, metal ball
rings…etc).
objective of this experimental
•
In this experiment interested in pressure drop and
loading & flooding through the packing column.
•
Finding pressure drop through paced column as a
function in air flow with a different water flows .
Flooding point
•
Amount of liquid flood in the top of the column, with increasing
pressure drop due to the accumulation of liquid in side packed
column.
•
There is an upper limit to the air flow rate velocity and above this
velocity the tower cannot operate.
Loading point
• Amount of liquid accumulate in side the packed
column ,that generate pressure drop.
Packed bed column
Experimental steps
• passing the maximum air flow until all evidence of moisture
in the packing has disappeared.
• run on the pump of air .
• pressure differential cross the column was readied At ( 0 )
flow rate of air.
• flow rate of air was started @ (20 L/min) , and then
pressure drop cross the column was readied. Then we
repeat this step until (160 L/min) air flow. And we take the
result @ dry & wet column.
• Then we change the water flow rate respectively
(1.5 , 2, 2.5 , 3 )L/min.

Discussions
•
From the graphs we see the loading point is appearing at 2 , 2.5
and 3 L/min of flow rate of water ,at 160 , 140 L / min of air flow
rate respectively.
• Also the flooding appears after the loading directly at 2.5 and
3 L / min of flow rate of water ,at 160 L / min of air flow rate for
each cases.
•
That’s mean if the water flow rate and air flow rate is increase
that makes water stopping in the column, that also mean there is
no dropping ,this case is called loading.
Conclusion
This experiment very important to
study the meaning of loading and
flooding points, and to know the type
of packing material and how we can
packed it.
