How to do trach care. Remember, some facilities throw away the intercannula now instead of cleaning it.

How to suction a tracheostomy. Pg 856
-Demonstrate use of ambu bag before and after suctioning as needed
-Teach about monitoring patient (O2 sats, RR, HR, etc)
-Documentation includes how pt tolerated, sputum characteristics
-Sterility
-Suction on withdrawal of catheter, max 10-15 sec. rotate catheter, etc.
-Assess for s/s that would indicate pt needed to be suctioned: abnormal respiratory rate, adventitious sounds on
inspiration or expiration, nasal secretions, gurgling, drooling, restlessness, gastric secretions or vomitus in mouth,
and coughing without clearing secretions from airway.
-During demonstration, show the students how to turn on the suction and oxygen
-Remember to do all of the assessments of the respiratory system before and after the suctioning

Chest tubes
Care of the patient with a chest tube, demonstrate basic skills for caring for a patient with a chest tube. The student
should be able to: state the purpose of a CT, assess the dressing, assess the amount and characteristics of the
drainage, assessing tubing patency, how to ambulate a patient, what to do if disconnection occurs (have pt exhale
and cough, immerse end under water:, and why not to clamp (clamping may cause lung collapse).

Oxygenation
Applying Nasal cannula and oxygen mask. Orientate to oxygen equipment, masks, tubing, regulators, airways,
trachs, etc. Faculty can talk about the responsibility of the RN related to O2 use, and the role of the respiratory
therapist.
Pulmonary Quiz
Flowmeter-how to set, how to read, oxygen vs air
How to use an incentive spirometer spirometer (there should be one in the bed side table).

Med/Lab Grid

Clean up
There are oxygen boxes already set up each with all the types of oxygen devices. Each student should be able to
understand and use each device. Place all items back in container and be sure to not mix up the devices within the
containers.
Review two medications and two labs with the group or with each clinical group as you see fit.
