ADDING AN ATTACHMENT TO AN ASSIGNMENT Attachments can be a combination of local files from your computer (.ppt, .doc, .txt, .xls, .html, etc., a complete list is offered below), files already uploaded under your course resources, or website URL’s (links to websites). To add an attachment to an assignment, follow these steps: 1. Click on the “Assignments” link on the left menu and then click on an assignment you want to attach something to. 2. Next, to add an attachment, click on the “Add Attachments" button as shown below. 3. At this step, you can choose either to upload a file from your computer, type in a URL / website address (omitting the http://) or select an existing course resource. To upload a file from your computer, click on the "Browse" button as shown below. 4. Then choose the file(s) you want to have attached or website addresses you would like to add and then click the “Continue” button to return to your assignment. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are using Microsoft’s new “Microsoft Office 2007”, keep in mind that when you save your documents, under the “File Name” box, you will see a “Save as type” drop down menu and you MUST choose either “Word 97-2003 & 6.0/95 – RTF” (*.doc) or “Rich Text Format” (*.rtf) or your instructor will more then likely not be able to open it; this also applies to Corel Word Perfect and Microsoft Works’ documents. ADDING AN ATTACHMENT TO A TOPIC/POST IN THE DISCUSSION AREA You can easily add attachments to your discussion posts. Here is the procedure, using an image as the attachment. Be sure to resize any images you want to include to a maximum width of 600 pixels wide, as larger images will appear larger than intended and will not fit normally within the window. • After typing the text portion of the post into the editor window, click on the “Attach Files” button at the bottom of the window. (Note: A post must have some text in the window as well as the attachment, even if it is a simple, "Here is my file.") • Next, locate the file(s) on your local computer that you want to attach. (Note: There is a limit of 3 attachments allowed and a total maximum of 5 megabytes.) It is a very good idea to include a description with your attachment so everyone will know what you are attaching. • Finally, click on the “Submit” button to post your reply with attachments. One thing to be aware of when adding attachments to posts is that only images and media files appear embedded (inline) within the posting, other files will have the description of the file you wrote and a “Download” button to the right. Allowable Extension Types This is a list of file types that can be added as attachments to your discussion posts. Your files must include one of these suffixes to upload it as an attachment. Image/Photo .bmp .jpg / .jpeg .gif .png .psd .tiff .swf Media .midi .mov .wav .mp3 .aac Document .doc .pdf .xls .ppt .pps .htm / .html Utilities ,gz .tar .zip .sit / .sitx File types which are NOT allowed include: .exe, .bat, .pif, .bin Note: Text must be included in the message window of the post that you are including an attachment. You cannot post a message with attachments without any text in the window. The browser will refresh and your post will not be accepted without any message. Here's an example of an enormous image posted by a user.
