the globe young players Information Pack In January 2014, Shakespeare’s Globe will be opening the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse – a 17th century reconstruction of an indoor Jacobean theatre that will be lit entirely by candlelight. As part of the first season in the new, indoor space, we will be performing The Malcontent with a new company of young players. This new company will be specially selected 12 to 16 year olds who will be given the once in a lifetime opportunity to train under the Globe’s own expert practitioners, on site, culminating in performing on stage. Open to a range of acting abilities and experience, the Globe Young Players is a free scheme designed to select the best talent from around the UK by holding open auditions for 12 – 16 year olds from any background, anywhere in the UK. Successful applicants will work once a week for six months followed by an intensive rehearsal period, culminating in Open auditions for the globe young players 25 – 28 July 2013, London Please note: these are the only audition dates for 2013. If you are unable to attend on these dates then unfortunately you will not be able to audition. All auditions, rehearsals and performances are in London. For the first time in 400 years, The Malcontent will be performed and recreated by a company of young actors for whom this play was originally written, in the tradition of the child actor companies of Shakespeare’s time. The Malcontent will play for 12 performances in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse from 3 to 19 April 2014, and will mark the finale of the Globe’s first ever winter season in the new indoor space. The Young Players will be schooled in the craft and performance of Early Modern drama, and work with professionals in text, voice, movement, dance and fights. Contact: [email protected] shakespearesglobe.com/youngplayers SCHEDULE OF Important Dates 25 – 28 July 2013 Open Auditions (1st Round) Please note if you have been successful in the audition, you will be invited to a workshop on either 14 September or 15 September 2013. 14 – 15 September 2013 Workshop (2nd Round) Please note if you have been successful in the workshop, you will be invited to audition for a specified role (or roles) in The Malcontent on either 28 September or 29 September 2013. 28 – 29 September 2013 Auditions for The Malcontent (3rd/Final Round) Please note if you have been successful in the third, final stage of auditions, you will be required to attend all Sunday training sessions between 3 November and 16 March, and all rehearsals and performances as per below. 3 November 2013 – 16 March 2014 Sunday Training Sessions Training Sessions start from 3 November 2013, and will take place every Sunday until 16 March 2014. (Sessions will not take place on 22 December and 29 December 2013). 19 – 30 March 2014* *Rehearsals for The Malcontent Training sessions will be followed by an intensive two and a half week rehearsal (and technical rehearsal) period between 19 March and 3 April 2014. 31 March – 3 April 2014*: Technical Rehearsals for The Malcontent *Please note that some absence from school will be required during these periods (as per The Children [Performances] Regulations). 3 – 19 April 2014 Performances of The Malcontent Professionally staged performances of The Malcontent will take place between 3 and 19 April 2014. The Audition Process Open Auditions 25 – 28 July 2013 Submissions to register for the open auditions close on 15 July. You will be notified via email by 19 July with further information as to which day your audition will be, and where it will take place (all auditions will take place in London). Please ensure that you check your email as this is our only point of contact with you. Please ensure that you sign and bring the Commitment form (overleaf) with you, along with a passport sized photo (please write the applicant’s name, date of birth and place of residence on the back) that you should attach to the Commitment form. What to expect on the day The Audition On each day of the auditions we will be running a ticketed system. Upon arrival, there will be Globe staff managing the queue and you will be presented with a ticket that will indicate a rough timeframe during which you will be seen. While we will do our best to see people as soon as possible, please be prepared to wait your turn as we are expecting a very high volume of applicants. What to prepare: There will be two pieces to prepare for the audition. Please note the queue for auditions will open at 9.30am and close at 6.30pm. Admissions will not be permitted after this time. Further Information for Parents/Guardians Please ensure that you or a family member/guardian accompany your child/ward at all times during the day as there is likely to be a substantial amount of waiting time and Globe staff cannot be held responsible. The first piece You can prepare any piece of writing of your choice to read. This should be between 30 seconds and 1 minute long. This can be a poem, a part of a speech (this does not have to be from a play), a song, or any piece of writing. You should choose something short and something that you are comfortable with. The second piece After you have registered, you will receive (along with other details regarding the audition) a number of speeches – you only need to choose ONE of these to read in the audition. It will be a short piece of verse from a play. We will also provide the choice of speeches, an explanation of each speech and its contents on the Young Players website: shakespearesglobe.com/youngplayers closer to the time. Who you will be meeting: When you come in to the audition, there will two people in the room. One will be from the Globe’s Casting department, and the other will be a member of the Globe Young Players team. The audition will last about 5 minutes. commitment Please sign this commitment agreement and bring it with you to your audition, along with a passport sized photo (please write the applicant’s name, date of birth and place of residence on the back) and attach it to this form. Please note that Shakespeare’s Globe does not pay travel or accommodation expenses. 12 – 16 YEAR OLDS I understand that an audition/workshop does not guarantee me a place in the Young Players company. Should I be successful, I will attend all Sunday sessions, rehearsals and performances as required and as per the schedule. Signed Parents/guardians In bringing your child/ward in to audition, you confirm that he/she is available for, and able to attend, all Sunday sessions, rehearsals and performances as required, and as set out above. Should he/she be successful, you undertake to ensure that they attend Sunday sessions, rehearsals and performances as required, and agree to escort them, at your own expense, to/from the rehearsal and/or performance venue. You agree that should he/she be successful, he/she will have to seek permission to be absent from school during the intensive rehearsal period, between 19 March – 3 April 2014, and you undertake the responsibility to negotiate directly with your child/ward’s school regarding these absences. Should approval not be granted or your council refuse to issue a licence, the Globe reserves the right to revoke his/her place. Attendance at all Sunday training sessions is compulsory.
