About VLC
The Volusia Literacy Council is a United Way partner agency
specializing in one-on-one and small group tutoring of adults who
have literacy skills below the ninth-grade level. Students are
assessed by a staff member in order to develop free, customized
learning programs, which are taught by qualified, trained
volunteers.

Adults with low-level literacy skills face many challenges each day.
Simple tasks such as finding their way around town, paying bills
and reading instructions can be frightening. Often feeling
ashamed and alone, these adults typically try to hide their lack of
skills – even from close friends and family.
Challenges are different for students who speak English as a
second language. They also face hurdles, such as not being able to
understand English well enough to apply for a job, understand
instructions on the job, or feel confident enough to shop at a grocery
or hardware store or to help their children with school work.
By helping these adults improve their literacy skills, the Volusia
Literacy Council can bring about amazing changes in their quality of life.
New oppor- tunities open up as parents, employees and members of
their communities.
Our Programs

Literacy for Adults
- One-on-one tutoring at local libraries, community
centers, churches, etc.
- Assistance with reading, writing, spelling, math and daily living
skills
- Pre-GED (General Equivalency Diploma) study materials available
English as a Second Language
- Adult tutoring available for speakers of other languages
in one-on-one and group settings
Workplace Literacy
- Company-sponsored, on-site tutoring
The Volusia Literacy Council receives partial funding from the United
Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties, Volusia County and Daytona State
College.
