The Skyder Track Company Limited has build a new single trail and therefore spectators get a new platform to watch. The course will be modified year by year towards the 2020 UCI Mountainbike World Championships in Albstadt. As in 2016 for the first time peloton will again climb up the Bullentäle, when they enter the valley for the first time. Instead of going right, they go straight upwards and then left, leaving out the part with the Mitas Devil’s corner in this first lap. The steep climb is what the Gonso Albstadt MTB Classic had the years before the world cup has been hold in Albstadt and it was drawing a great atmosphere. And it spreads the bunch before they enter the first single trail. So this years change of the course will be met not until second lap. After the Gonso Rock Garden, the RedBull Climb offers two lines to climb. Now, instead of entering the gravel road uphill, the course via drop leads right hand down and then follows the new Shimano Uphill below the gravel road, climbing up then via switch backs to enter the gravel road close to the top and then connecting to the Mitas Devil’s corner as before. Due to this modification, the gravel road will now be open for spectators. This point offers a perfect view on the whole valley. Also from the valley the riders are not out of sight, when they climb after the Red Bull double climb. Also to make it more comfortable for spectators, for the short climb after the Mitas Devil’s corner, there is now a separate trail for the riders. So fans can use the broader gravel road to watch. For the first complete lap, the track leads the riders in a moderate climb, when they enter the Bullentäle. Looking upwards on the right hand side. Then they come back to the entrance of the Gonso Rock Garden above the Bullentäle. After that the riders are jumping over the Albstadt Drop, flying through Devils Waves in the Bullentäle, cheered by the well known enthusiastic crowd in Albstadt. One observer last year called the atmosphere there a “cauldron”, in German: “Hexenkessel”. Then it goes into Rothaus Jump, passing the Feed Zone, climbing the Gonso Uphill, hunting down the Mazda Slalom, where a new short section was inserted. All that before the riders have to cope with the Volksbank Albstadt Deep Hole. The character of the 4,18 kilometer stays mainly physically demanding, of course. But in combination with the challenging steep climbs, the technical parts are not that easy to handle as you look at it in the very first moment. So far, so good. So fast and furious. The fifth edition of the Albstadt world cup counts on all the rest worked well the years before. The paths for the audience has also got some more improvement. From the “Hexenkessel” Bullentäle, where a speaker comments and the most of the spectators are in and a second video wall makes it easy to follow, you can now cross over much easier to the Gonso uphill and also to the Mazda downhill. And from there along the course down to the Albstadt Volksbank Deep Hole and towards the finish. 2017 UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP TEAM-GUIDE 08 XCO-COURSE MAP The XCO Course Map 2017 UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP TEAM-GUIDE 09 XCO-RACING The trail in Bullentäle 2017 UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP TEAM-GUIDE 10 AWARD CEREMONY Cross Country – Times SATURDAY 27 MAY 14:00 UCI Junior Event - Women & Men 15:40 World Cup Olympic Cross-Country - Men U23 19:30 GONSO Albstadt MTB Classic SUNDAY 28 MAY 10:30 World Cup Olympic Cross-Country - Women U23 12:45 World Cup Olympic Cross-Country - Women Elite 16:15 World Cup Olympic Cross-Country - Men Elite MEDICAL A fully dedicated medical team will be available during all official practice and competition times. Albstadt 2017 is the 20th hold on German soil. Six times in St. Wendel, five times in Offenburg and now also five times in Albstadt. The host of the second world cup 2017 has been awarded to hold the xc world championships in 2020. It’s then 25 years after Kirchzarten 1995, when the first and only cross country world championships were held in Germany. # Only five male riders on the start list of World Cup opener have ever won a world cup. These are Julien Absalon (33), Nino Schurter (20), Jaroslav Kulhavy (9), Florian Vogel (2) and Daniel McConnell (1). # The „Big Three“ are taking the most of it. Since 2010 only four riders were able to break into the phalanx of Nino Schurter, Julien Absalon and Jaroslav Kulhavy by winning a world cup race. 2016 the saga continued and now they have 24 races in a row, defending their extraordinary position. The six world cup races 2016 were split into 3 victories for Nino Schurter and 3 for Julien Absalon. The last time another rider was able to win a world cup was in, exactly, 2013 in Albstadt, when Daniel McConnell triumphed. # In the elite women’s category there are 12 riders, currently still active, who won a world cup. Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjaa (29), Catharine Pendrel (12), Jolanda Neff (8), Irina Kalentieva (8), Annika Langvad (3), Elisabeth Osl (3), Maja Wloszczowska (3), Eva Lechner (3), Pauline Ferrand Prevot (3), Tanja Zakelj (2), Sabine Spitz (2), Nathalie Schneitter (1). # In the men’s category, there is a head-to-head race in terms of World Cup victories per nation. Swiss leads by 55 wins to 51 of France. Next are the US. They scored 17 but the last one dates from 1994. # In the women’s category, the battle is between Canada and US, with 37 to 36 wins. Switzerland counts 20 victories. # In the elite men’s category, the last German victory in the World Cup Olympic cross country discipline dates back exactly 24 years. Mike Kluge won in Houffalize, Belgium in 1993. Afterwards, Wolfram Kurschat climbed on the podium in 2009 two times, in Offenburg and in Houffalize as second. Followed by Manuel Fumic, finishing second in 2010 in Houffalize and 2014 in Pietermaritzburg. 2017 UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP TEAM-GUIDE 13 ALBSTADT AND HIS HISTORY OF BIKING „Albstadt, dedicated to mountain biking“ Albstadt and mountain biking, that’s a tight connection. One, which started already at the end of the eighties, when Albstadt cyclists Marc Faude and Stephan Salscheider discovered the new kind of bike and decided to take part at the precursor of UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, the international Grundig Cup. The duo was present in the regional press and soon the people in the area knew very well what’s going on with the young and wild cycling discipline. So, the door was already a gap open, when in 1995 the LBS Bike Marathon celebrated its premiere. It was one of the first marathons in Germany at all and it came into being by the idea to connect by bike all of nine villages with Albstadt consists of. It was and it is an overwhelming success. 3000 participants are riding this marathon every year and easily it could be more, if the number would not be limited. The LBS Bike Marathon is part of the years cycle in 46000 inhabitants counting city. The crowd makes it very special. The spectators partially standing in rows of three or four at the climbs, creating an enthusiastic atmosphere. Mountain biking, that belongs to the city culture of Albstadt, not only because of the hilly topography on the Swabian Alb. That became obvious at the Gonso Albstadt MTB Classic, which were started in 2005 and then in 2013 first time successful hosted an UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. Already at the premiere edition, the German nationals, such a splendid mood ruled at the race course, causing an experienced bike journalist questioning: “What’s going on here?” Mountain Biking is going on in Albstadt and in the district of Zollernalbkreis, so far you can say without exaggeration. After organizing the German nationals in Tailfingen a second time in 2006, the event hosted an International MTB-Bundesliga race in 2007. Already with a lot of prominent figures in the competition. Women’s victory went to Irina Kalentieva (Rus), who in the same year should become world champion. Second placed Sabine Spitz got the silver medal and one year later she celebrated gold at the Olympic Games in Peking. Same as the Albstadt winner in men’s race, Julien Absalon (Fra), who won in the Bullentäle as he did in Bejing 2008 in front of his countryman Jean-Christophe Péraud. To avoid conflicts with the program of the cross country riders in the Olympic year, the Gonso Albstadt MTB Classic in 2008 hosted the European Marathon Championships. In 2009 the event came back into the Bundesliga series, first time registered in UCI’s Hors Class status. 2010 to 2014 another event was inserted into the mountain bike portfolio of the area. The Sparkasse TRANS Zollernalb was a three days stage race with around 600 participants, which also stopped in Albstadt. As a peak of everything, in January Albstadt was awarded to host the UCI Cross Country World Championships 2020. All in all Albstadt self-confident could claim: "Mountainbiking owns his place here!" Sabine Spitz underlined that some years later in one sentence: “If I could, I would like to pack the Albstadt crowd into a bus, taking it with me everywhere I race.” 2017 UCI MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP TEAM-GUIDE 14 OVERALL WORLD-CUP 2017 MEN ELITE SUN 21 MAY 2017 CROSS-COUNTRY OLYMPIC Men Elite Individual Standings 1.
