PERSPECTIVES WHERE WE WORK TRASH TALK CORPTRAV APP REBUILDING OKLAHOMA AUGUST 2013 02 A MESSAGE FROM JOHN Community Service In May of this year, our company had the opportunity to really step up and provide relief to the community in and around Moore, Oklahoma as a result of the extensive tornado damage. I am extremely proud of the actions of all of our employees who contributed to this effort. Members of our MidCon team mobilized immediately to deploy light plants, generators and helping hands to the scene. They distributed bottled Our region cook teams moved in and began cooking around the clock for emergency personnel and victims, preparing over 3,500 meals. Employees from locations across Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana collected clothes, diapers, toys and household items for families who lost their homes. In addition, Select pledged to match a portion of employee donations and a corporate giving site was set up through the Red Cross. Together, employees and Select donated well over $20,000 to a disaster relief fund and all of these actions are very much indicative of the kind of folks we have at Select. My hat is off to you! Company Update As we approach the midway point in 2013, the year thus far has been, as Dickens wrote, A Tale of Two Cities. the levels of revenue growth that we had enjoyed prior to the major downturn in natural gas prices in late 2011. unplanned downturn in our revenue. that they can trust to show up on time, do whatever it takes to get the job done and operate safely at all times. token, when we have a job failure, the ripple effect from that failure can impact not only the particular service line involved but can potentially harm Select across the board with that customer. We need to get our revenue organizations to be mindful of revenue generating opportunities and to the ops folks in particular, to understand new growth opportunities. Another aspect of producing revenue for Select involves the breadth of customers we work for. It is human nature to get very comfortable doing business with a small group of customers that we have gotten to know well and being highly responsive to their needs. While that is a comfortable position, it also can be a risky position when that customer goes through a periodic downturn in their activity – as they all do – and we may not have good thing but let’s make sure that we are also focused on adding new customers and providing new services to existing customers as well. The second half of the year should bring us a better activity environment to work in so let’s all put on our sales hat and get the revenue line growing! As always, my thanks go out to all 4,700 Select employees (and their families) for your hard work and dedication. - John 03 PEOPLE ON THE MOVE BJ Heathcoat Service Line Director Field Services Jeremy Townley Division VP of WellOne Zach Bowman RVP Bakken Please join us in congratulating these fantastic employees on their new and exciting positions! AUGUST 2013 04 TAIL GATE TALKS SAFETY MEETINGS 05 THE SELECT EDITION At the beginning of each Select project it is important to have a starting place, where everyone can come together and discuss what needs to be done. The most convenient and effective way to do this is through meetings. There are different kinds of meetings, some detailed, some less formal. It is vital we have a plan of action in place that everyone understands. Select has a couple different kinds of planning meetings for upcoming projects. Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) is a method for evaluating a job in order to identify the steps necessary to reduce the associated risks to personnel and the environment during operations. The JHA is a useful tool meant to develop solutions that will eliminate, minimize or provide protection from hazards and incidents. The JHA process, when utilized as part of a pre-job safety meeting, is a valuable part of our accident prevention program. In addition to hazard recognition and incident prevention, a well work crew. “ Tailgate meetings are about 15 minutes and are less formal, with the common topic of safety. They tend to reiterated what has been stated in the JHA meeting. Meetings are held about once a week to reinforce our company’s philosophy that job safety is important. It is a way to refresh the project at hand, along with understanding the caution needed for a safe environment to work in. A tailgate talk provides an opportunity for a supervisor to emphasize the importance of a particular comments. Meetings may include recent injuries, safety violations, upcoming work schedule, what safety Like any tool, they can’t help unless you use them! to help problem solving in any foreseeable future issues. Also, by sharing information about the upcoming project, everyone should be on the same page, working toward a common goal. Without these JHA and Toolbox meetings there would be a lot of miscommunication and more safety issues. For more information please refer to your safety handbook. If you don’t have one, contact your regional safety manager. “ The work starts with the salesperson making the sale and talking with the customer about safety standards within their company. From there, the salesperson takes the information to the kickoff meeting where they meet with operations and safety people. At the kickoff meeting sales, operations and safety all talk about the job at hand and what Select needs to do in order to meet the customer’s standards. This is an important meeting where all three groups work together in order to get the job done right. Afterwards, safety takes the information and feeds it down the line. A TAILGATE TALK PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR A SUPERVISOR TO EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF A PARTICULAR ISSUE OR PROCEDURE AUGUST 2013 06 The Proof is in the Blood Employees receive Biometric Screenings thanks to Blue Cross Blue Shield and Health Solutions in Gainesville and Rockies. S and Health Solutions and provided biometric screenings to our NTX, ETX/LA, Rockies and Gainesville employees. Biometric screenings provided information on your current and potential future medical issues. Employees received reliable health information about possible future health risks for chronic preventable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. They also were provided with guidance on preventable measures. There were nutritional/health displays that contained information about healthy meal portions, and healthy snack and food choices for employees and their families. Prizes were also given away to employees for attending the screenings. 07 THE SELECT EDITION “ I found today’s BMI screening a very pleasant experience. I felt I knew my general state of health, but after this short screening, I was made aware of some basic things I should look into and change about my daily diet and exercise plan. Thank you for this service.” - David Ralston, Rockies AESC Scholarships Here at Select Energy Services we are proud to be members of several Oil and Gas Industry Associations. It is a popular acrostic that seems to actually make sense. Team Building is com as the ability to identify and motivate individual employees to form a team that stays together, works together and achieves together. The MidCon accounting team got muddy in a 5K for the “Heroes Kids” charity. Here at Select we have a melting departments, and locations that work together as a team under Select. The concept of teambuilding within a company has 5 main ideas. First, have “idea” people and people who can make ideas work. Second, communicate goals that are realistic, measurable, and achievable. Third, estimate universal roles. Fourth is to 11 THE SELECT EDITION identify questions and issues that have fun! Several regions have already begun to participate in teambuilding exercises. A few regions have hosted pot lucks where everyone can come and enjoy each other’s company while having a big feast at the hands of Select employees. Another is to have get-togethers that help the community, like volunteer work with charities. Some regions even have volunteer competitions between yards to see who can collect the most donations or even who can get the most volunteer hours. Here you are not only getting to know each other but also helping people in need in your area. There are also sports teams that regions can create, within Select or even against other companies that really uses fun and competiveness to bring people closer together. Finally, there are things like the Relay for Life, Avon walk for breast cancer, Mud Run, and Color Run that are great activities for teambuilding. It is important to get to know fellow employees and work as a team so we are able to “achieve more”!!!! Employees in the Rockies region compete in the annual Clash of the Can Coporate Challenge. In conclusion, teambuilding is great for companies to participate in. It improves communication and motivation along with creating a more cohesive and productive environment. We would like to encourage more teambuilding events within the company and be sure to get a picture to email to the newsletter group so we can put it on the Select Facebook page! Gainesville employees and their families gather every year to raise money and awareness for cancer research in the annual Relay for Life. Perspectives In case you haven’t noticed, we’re a big company – with LOTS of people! We’re always looking for new ways to connect the employees of Select, whether it be through our website, Facebook or The Select Edition. In this new column, we’ll ask a handful of employees the same question and see the different answers here. Have a great idea for a question? Curious? We’d love to hear from you! E-mail us! [email protected] What’s a team building activity you’d like to see your region participate in? Bobby Goins E.Texas/N.Louisiana, Office Manager “I would like to take part in a paintball team building exercise experience. It enhances group dynamics, improves morale, enhances camaraderie, plus great exercise.” Michelle Thomas E.Texas/N.Louisiana, HR Generalist “In this team building activity, participants work to build the tallest free-standing tower they can with the supplies given. The tallest tower helps illustrate the importance of collaboration and communication and often ends with and ‘aha!’ moment when teams realize they are not collaborating as well as they could be. You will need some low-cost supplies such as: paper cups, plates, popsicle sticks or coffee sturrers and tape. There is some set up required before you begin.” Jami Blagrave Permian, Senior Staff Accountant “Quarterly staff meetings with a training lesson from another department could help improve a sense of unity throughout the office and expand knowledge throughout all departments.” Christine Sustaita South Texas, Administrative Assistant “A fun idea for team building would be if Select employees get together once in a great while and had ice cream and just socialized with one another.” Jessica Knabe Corporat, Accounts Payable Processor “Either doing volunteer work or different types of charity would assist with team building while being a positive impact on the communities that welcome us.” Nicholas Tyler Brown E.Texas / N.Louisiana, IT Team Lead “A region wide fishing tournament, where you partner up with other employees and fish as a team. At the end of the day everything caught could be cleaned cooked and served to all employees at a dinner where we get more time to get to know each other outside of work” Savannah Suzanne Dial E.Texas / N.Louisiana, Support/Processor “Job Swap- take a few hours to swap jobs with a co-worker to get a better understanding of exactly what each of us do for the company. Create a list of a few daily tasks for each other to do.” Elva Stillwell MidCon, Accounting Support “A fun team building activity would be the color run, it would promote unity as well as healthy living.” Marilyn Brown E.Texas / N.Louisiana, Administrative Assistant “I’ve been involved in team building events on pervious jobs but it was usually a day of activities and games with co-workers designed to get to know each other and establish trust among the group. Since that was office personnel only, I think it would be a good idea to set up suggestion boxes in a designated area at each location and allow employees such as truck drivers, field workers, etc. to submit ideas of group activities that they might have in mind for team building.” Truman Yeary MidCon, Senior Staff Accountant “Recently the accounting department ran in a 5k mud run, I would like for our next team building activity to be a color run.” Miranda Bowers MidCon, Accounting Manager “Charity events such as the color run or the mud run would allow you to work together as a team plus do something nice for other people” Bobby Watson E.Texas / N.Louisiana, IT Manager “Company-wide participation in a local charity would be a selfless team building activity which would benefit not only our company but our communities.” AUGUST 2013 12 Where We Work. Other than the oil, another attraction is its scenic rolling hills. Williston also has a rail station, Amtrak, which will commute travelers to Portland, Seattle or Chicago. About a year ago Jefferson bus line began servicing Williston as well. A few small tidbits about the town include: most General Motors Corvettes sold in the upper Midwest are sold in Williston. The town has a manmade lake known as Lake Sakakawea that is a popular destination for anglers across the nation. It has one of the most diverse populations of wild life anywhere in American.
