IMPORTANTANCE OF PRACTICE AND NORTHWEST POOL UPDATE
We are happy to be back to Northwest and the new roof and ventilation construction was a success. The boiler
(pool heater) was shut off for 6 months during the construction and resulted in no pressure. When they turned it
back on in October the pressure was too much and developed some cracks to the old boiler. It is leaking and
needs to be replaced. The city has a grant approved to replace it and will present it to the city council in
December. Once all the planning is done and the new boiler is ordered, delivered and arrived they will have to
shut down NW Pool up to 30 days or more, maybe less. That is if things go well and the boiler does not fail before
all the orders and delivery of the new boiler is at NW Pool and ready to install. In worst case scenario, the boiler
could fail at any time and the pool will be down for a while. Is this common? YES. UNR and Douglas’s pool are
going through similar repairs this December. Sparks are still not in their home pool yet, which leaves RENO
without a pool in Reno. We still have Evelyn Mount Pool (NE) and this will not interrupt Mini, White or Blue
groups. However this will have a direct affect on the National, Senior, Pre-Senior and Orange Groups.
Kurt Meyer who is the Aquatics Director at Carson City Pool has been gracious and will allow us to use their Pool
Mon-Fri evenings 7:00-9:00pm for the National, Senior, Pre-Senior and Orange Groups. This may come to you as a
shock and that is understood. But pools are temperamental and the Northwest Pool is going through some great
renovations that will keep it around for another 50 years. The boiler was purchased used in the mid 70’s and
originally built in the 60’s, so it needs to be replaced. It was a matter of time and every pool in the world needs
work from time to time. As inconvenient as this may be for all of us and the time Carson is providing us is not ideal
it does keep us in the water. We are fortunate to have their support and a pool within 30 minutes. It is important
to bring this to your attention so none of our swimmers and families will be caught off guard. Again, I gave you
worst case scenario, the boiler failing before the replacement is planned for. The city understands the urgency of
this matter and is working with all aquatic users. This affects NNA, LAKE and Sierra Master plus all the city
programs. The best case scenario is having the boiler live until the new one is ready to be replaced and the city
can do so in shortest amount of time possible. At that time we will go to our alternate schedule in Carson. In the
mean time, it would be a good idea to have RENO members for National, Senior, Pre-Senior and Orange begin
discussion carpools and a schedule for you to practice Monday – Friday if we need to act fast. Plan for the worst
and hope for the best, lets be prepared.
Our holiday practice schedule offered extra days (Sunday) and two days each week for Mini, White and Blue so we
can keep our endurance up in case we have to take 2-3 days for Carson to schedule staff for our alternate practice
schedule. We also have two meets in January; RENO has the Blizzard Blast in Carson Jan 16-18 and National and
Senior are tentatively planning on attending the Washington Open Jan 15-18 (pending the boiler). I suspect the
NW boiler will make it and none of our practices will be interrupted without adequate communication. With all
this brought to your attention I suggest everyone make their best effort to make each practice. After January we
will be preparing for another season of Championship meets in March (Junior Olympics – San Ramon Ca) and April
(Far Westerns – Morgan Hill Ca). We just finished a great Nevada State meet and heading into the Arizona
Championships and US Nationals in December. The coaching staff is prepared to continue running practices
affectively and preparing for continued success. All of you still here have been through a lot and proved you have
strength and determination. Between all the staff changes, constructions, fires and weather we can handle a brief
alternate practice schedule and continue great performances.
WASHINGTON OPEN 2015 MEET SHEET IS ON OUR WEBSITE UNDER “EVENTS”
 This meet is open to all National and Senior swimmers who qualify
 We will wait until December 15 to determine if we will attend this meet (pending boiler at NW)
