Rainbow Lab
Objectives:
1. Develop skills measuring chemicals with a graduated cylinder.
2. Practice using the metric system.
3. Test precision and ability to follow directions.
4. Practice lab safety procedures.
Materials:
6 Test tubes labeled A, B, C, D, E, F
Test tube rack
Graduated cylinder
2 beakers
Beaker with red liquid
Beaker with yellow liquid
Beaker with blue liquid
Goggles
Paper towels
Procedure:
Part 1:
Before you begin, put your goggles on and do not remove them until you walk
out the classroom.
_____1. Label 6 test tubes in order: A, B, C, D, E & F.
_____2. Fill a beaker half full with water. Use this to rinse your graduated
cylinder and test tubes.
_____3. The second beaker is for waste water.
_____4. Measure 21 mL of RED liquid using the graduated cylinder and pour into
test tube A.
_____5. Rinse the graduated cylinder with your water and pour the waste into
your waste beaker.
_____6. Measure 17 mL of YELLOW liquid and pour into test tube C.
_____7. Measure 21 mL of BLUE liquid and pour into test tube E.

Part 2:
Rinse the graduated cylinder with clean water between each measurement.
_____1. From test tube C, measure 4 mL and pour into test tube D.
_____2. From test tube E, measure 7 mL and pour into test tube D. Swirl.
_____3. From test tube E, measure 4 mL and pour into test tube F.
_____4. From test tube A, measure 7 mL and pour into test tube F. Swirl.
_____5. From test tube A, measure 8 mL and pour into test tube B.
_____6. From test tube C, measure 3 mL and pour into test tube B. Swirl.
_____7. Measure the contents of each test tube and record how many mL are
in each test tube in your data table. Also, record the color in each test
tube.
_____8. Create a bar graph of your results. Use color for each respective test
tube.
