Dear Parents,
Year 6 Curriculum Overview - Autumn Term
In our topic work this term, Year 6 will be focusing on a Maths and History project with Chelmsford
Museum entitled Marconi Mania. As well as researching the life and achievements of Guglielmo
Marconi, we will also be investigating communication and looking at the plans of the Marconi New
Street factory. There will be opportunities for data representations of how far wireless transmissions
were sent at different times. We will be working scientifically, using test results to make predictions
and to set up further comparative and fair tests. Key stage 2 will be visiting Chelmsford Museum on
Tuesday 13th September. Kingswood residential week is also a much-anticipated part of the autumn
term. Final details will be sent to parents shortly.
Children are always encouraged to bring any information or books related to the topics into school to
share with the class and use within lessons.
In English this term, we will be writing our own extracts of a legend as well as writing poetry, stories,
arguments and developing our skills as a journalist to write a newspaper report. In Maths we will be
revisiting and developing our number and calculation skills, as well as concentrating on problem
solving, increasing our ability to apply our maths knowledge.
In Science, we will be investigating whether light travels in straight lines and how light travels from
light sources to our eyes. We will also look at the refraction and dispersion of light, using data loggers
to help our investigations.
To support your child it would be useful to hear them read regularly and to ask them questions about
the book they are reading. Revision of times tables would also be helpful. Maths and, occasionally,
topic homework will be set on Friday and given in on Monday.
6C will be undertaking an exciting music and enterprise project, resulting eventually in the creation
and public performance of an opera, with Miss Plunkett on Wednesday. The class will have games
lessons with Mr King on a Thursday and Friday. Please make sure that they have their PE kit in school
for these sessions. 6C will continue with Spanish and Music lessons.
Parents’ evenings are on Tuesday 8th November and Wednesday 9th November, at which time I will be
able to give you further advice as to how to continue to support your child. However, if you have any
concerns, please do not hesitate to speak with me briefly in the morning or after school. I am looking
forward to working with you and your child in what promises to be a very exciting year.
Yours faithfully,
Mr D. Curley
