Mouser-Sponsored Student Solar Car Team Takes Second Place
Team Recognized with Lockheed Martin Award for Engineering Excellence
August 4, 2016 – Mouser Electronics, the global authorized distributor with the newest semiconductors and
electronic components, is proud to congratulate the Shine Runners Racing Company from Ben Barber
Career and Technology Academy in Mansfield, Texas, on a strong second-place finish in the classic division
of the 2016 Solar Car Challenge. The Shine Runners team checked off a total of 549.6 miles on the way to
the finish line.
For the fifth-straight year, Mouser sponsored the Ben Barber team as they raced a solar car they
designed and built against other high school teams from across the country. On alternating years, the teams
race at the world-famous Texas Motor Speedway or drive cross-country to share their project cars with
millions of people. This year’s course was a sweltering seven-day trek (July 17–23) from Fort Worth to
Minneapolis powered solely by the sun. The team also was honored with the prestigious Lockheed Martin
Award, presented to the solar car team that displayed the highest level of engineering excellence.
The Solar Car Challenge was established in 1993 with a goal to motivate students in science and
engineering and to increase alternative energy awareness. The challenge teaches high school students
around the world how to build roadworthy solar cars.
“We at Mouser have a long history supporting education, particularly math, science and engineering,”
said Kevin Hess, Mouser’s Senior Vice President of Marketing. “This is a highly creative and educational
exercise, and we could not be more proud of this group of talented teenagers at Ben Barber. Winning the
Lockheed Award for engineering excellence is just the icing on the cake.”
The Mouser-sponsored team from Ben Barber competed against 20 teams from across the nation,
including groups from schools as far away as New York, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Colorado, Florida
and California. Mouser’s sponsorship of the Ben Barber program includes financial support, as well as
providing parts for the car and giving recommendations on development of the vehicle. To learn more about
