Spicer® Drive Axles P/N: SHAIS207B INFORMATION SHEET – Adding Retaining Lock Hardware Parts to Convert Original First Generation 170/190/590 carriers Affected Models: All 170, 190, 590 models designed or made BEFORE JUNE 10, 2013 Below are detailed instructions to add retaining lock hardware parts to original designed carriers for the purpose of converting those carriers that were designed with the original one-piece threaded bearing cup adjusters over to a two-piece conventional system. When using any 170/190/590 Spicer Bearing Retrofit Kit, the original one-piece threaded bearing cup & adjusters must be discarded as part of the conversion. The current design two-piece (bearing cup and bearing adjuster) parts must be used along with new style diff cases when doing all conversions. The retaining lock hardware parts must be used and added as shown below. IMPORTANT! It is important to follow each step in the procedure to insure a proper carrier conversion. You must also replace and use all of the component parts included in any Spicer Bearing Retrofit Kit. Failure to use these parts together could lead to reassembly issues or a non-working carrier or premature failure if a carrier is put back into service. Original One Piece, Threaded Bearing Adjuster with Retaining Ring-Cannot be used if retrofitting old design carriers to use newer design parts. Two piece conventional Bearing Cup & Bearing Adjuster – If retrofitting old carriers so new parts can be used – these must be used along with new retaining lock hardware parts. Spicer bearing retrofit kits have been released that include all of the required parts (less the wheel diff cases which are sold separately) so older generation models can be rebuilt using current design parts. The 504144 hardware parts kit below contains multiple retainer clip variations that allow for variable adjuster positions. The hardware parts kit is available separately and also included with all 170/190/590 Bearing Retrofit Kits. Spicer Hardware Parts Kit: 504144 2- Straight lock clips (p/n 140027) 2- Bent lock clips (p/n 140028) 4- Lock spacers (p/n 140029) 4- M6 x 1.25 bolts (p/n 10005790) Bent Lock Clip Straight Lock Clip 1 Retaining Lock Hardware Conversion and Installation Procedure 1. With the carrier reassembled with the new bearing cups and adjusters, make sure the adjuster notch at the 12:00 position is centered to the carrier cap. 2. Now choose the combination of clip and spacer that places the locking clip in the center of the adjuster lugs. Note: The position of the retainer lock does not have to be perfectly positioned on the carrier cap. Just make sure the tab of the lock fills the notch as shown above. Lock Tab Adjuster Lug 3. Center the locking clip tab between the adjust lugs and mark the drill locations with a marker. 2 4. With a center punch mark each location. 5. IMPORTANT! BEFORE you start the drilling and hole tap process, protect the wheel differential bearings from contamination by covering with protective cloth, rags or masking/duct tape. 6. Place a piece of tape on the drill bit to represent the depth of the hole. The hole will need to be at least 1/8” deeper than the length of the bolt. 7. Use a 3/16” dill bit. Drill each hole. Keep the drill as square to the carrier as possible. 1/8” 3 8. With a M6 x1.25 tap, tap out both holes. Remove all metal shavings and clean with air. 9. Before you install the capscrews apply Loctite 242 or equivalent for medium size fasteners. 10. Snug down each capscrews and torque to 10 -12 ft. lbs. (13-16 Nm) SHAIS207B NOV 2015 Printed in U.S.A.
