Novel findings on EMDR neurobiology and mechanisms of action. Marco Pagani, MD, Ph.D 11.30-12.30 Lunch 13.00-14.00 Årsmöte 14.00-17.00 Trauma and mental health: Advances in EMDR therapy. Novel findings on EMDR neurobiology and mechanisms of action. Marco Pagani Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies – CNR Rome – Italy Research focused on EMDR has dramatically grown and neuroimaging represents a powerful tool to investigate its neurobiological correlates. The impact of EMDR on cortical and subcortical brain regions involved in PTSD has been proven by several investigations demonstrating a clear association between symptoms disappearance and normalization of cortical functional changes. Furthermore, patients non-responding to EMDR showed peculiar patterns of neuronal density distribution in limbic regions. EEG investigations monitoring in real time the cortical activations occurring during bilateral ocular desensitization made of EMDR ,the first psychotherapy in which neurobiological correlates have been depicted in real time during therapy sessions. In the recent past EMDR has been successfully applied in several disease and hypotheses about the way it works has been proposed by different investigators. The purpose of the lecture is to summarize past and recent research findings and present the evidences of one of the possible mechanisms of action. Marco Pagani Medical Doctor 1985, PhD in Brain Neurophysiology and Nuclear Medicine Methodology on 2000 at Karolinska Institute of Stockholm] is a senior research scientist (Primo Ricercatore) at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of the Italian National Research Council (ISTC-CNR) and Senior Member of the Neuroimaging Committee of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM). Trauma and mental health: Advances in EMDR therapy Isabel Fernandez Centro Ricerca e Studi in Psicotraumatologia – Milano President EMDR Europe Association From the beginning EMDR has demonstrated effectiveness in treating chronic PTSD and old trauma memories that can underlie most mental disorders. EMDR therapy has developed as a complete approach, that is effective not only with symptoms that show significant remission, but also promoting behavioral change and post-traumatic growth Clinical experience of thousands of EMDR clinicians as well as research have evidenced that EMDR therapy can be effective not only with “A” criteria trauma, but also for “early relational and attachment trauma”. In the last years research in the field of neuroscience and psychopathology has highlighted the relevant role of early neglect and interpersonal trauma as an important risk factors in the field of mental health. This confirms the contribution of EMDR in the treatment of small “t” trauma, that has been one of the focus of Francine Shapiro’s work. During the presentation the latest publications regarding the role of this kind of trauma in the development of mental disorders (DSM- 5) will be shown. The EMDR community is having an active role throughout Europe dealing with the latest critical and massive events occurring in many European countries. During the presentation the use of EMDR therapy will be described in the field of interventions with victims of terroristic attacks, mass disasters and with refugees and asylum seekers.
