Beyond the Asterisk: Understanding Native Students in Higher Education, edited by Shotton et al.
While the success of higher education and student affairs is predicated on understanding
the students we serve, the reality is, where the Native American population is concerned,
that this knowledge is generally lacking. This lack may be attributed to this population’s
invisibility within the academy and its relegation to what is referred to as the “American
Indian research asterisk.” The purpose of this book is to move beyond the asterisk in an
effort to better understand Native students, challenge the status quo, and provide an
informed base for higher education leaders.

Community (FLC)
Book Group
Members of this faculty learning community will meet every three weeks between September
and March to share insights and experiences drawn from their practical teaching and learning
experiences, to discuss readings and current events that pose questions about multicultural and
global competency, and to develop strategies and tools to enhance their own and their students’
global and cultural competencies in both curricular and co-curricular settings.
All new faculty will receive a copy of Creating Significant Learning Experiences:
An Integrated Approach to Designing College Courses, by Dee Fink.
This book provides busy faculty with invaluable conceptual and procedural tools for
instructional design. Step by step, Fink shows how to use a taxonomy of significant learning
and systematically combine the best research-based practices for learning-centered teaching
with a teaching strategy in a way that results in powerful learning experiences.

Transforming the Academy: Faculty Perspectives on Diversity & Pedagogy, by S. Willie-LeBreton.
In recent decades, American universities have begun to tout the “diversity” of their faculty
and student bodies. But what kinds of diversity are being championed in their admissions
and hiring practices, and what kinds are being neglected? Is diversity enough to solve the
structural inequalities that plague our universities? And how might we articulate the value of
diversity in the first place?
