An Introduction to Sensory Processing Friday 11th November 2016, 9.30 – 1.00pm The Education Suite- Florence Nightingale Unit 2, Walton Lodge, Walton Street, Aylesbury HP21 7QY Do you know or work with a child who finds everyday tasks a challenge? Are they easily distracted by sights, sounds and touch? Do they have trouble sitting still? Is this affecting their play and learning? Do they find it hard to stay calm and regulate their emotions? This course will help you to understand why and how sensory processing differences affect a child’s participation, learning and behaviour. You will be given an overview of sensory processing theory and behavioural indicators which may suggest sensory processing differences as well as strategies to support children with these differences. Course Outline: To understand the theory of sensory processing An overview of how sensory processing difficulties can affect behaviour and learning Strategies to support a child with sensory processing differences Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course you will: Understand the terminology used in describing sensory processing Be able to identify behaviours which may indicate sensory processing differences Understand how sensory processing difficulties can affect a child’s learning and engagement Be able to identify strategies to support a child with sensory processing differences Who is it for? SENDCO’s, Teachers, early years educators, learning support assistants, Healthcare professionals new to paediatrics and those interested in finding out more about the impact of sensory processing on participation, learning and behavior. She has a particular interest in sensory processing and the impact this has on a child's ability to engage in everyday activities. She has carried out additional training to extend her professional knowledge, including Working with children with Autism, Sensory Processing, SCERTS and PECS, and is currently undertaking post graduate training to become a Practitioner in Sensory Integration. She joined Puzzle Centre in 2014, where she works alongside the specialist teachers, speech and language therapists and learning support assistants to provide early intervention for children with Autism and other communication difficulties. Ella Millerchip, B.Ed (Hons) N.N.E.B Ella has over 20 years’ experience working in early years settings. She worked in Mainstream settings as an Early Years teacher prior to joining the Puzzle Team. Ella has completed the Open University ‘Understanding Autism’ Course, attended the 2 day Picture Exchange Communication System training course and the NAS One day SPELL course. She has a sound knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum and how the curriculum can be used alongside the SCERTS framework.
