A short history of the cigarette
Cigarette is a French
word which literally
means ‘little cigar’.
Cigars and cigarettes are made from
the leaves of the tobacco plant.
Tobacco has been in existence for
thousands of years. Ancient cultures
used to chew it, smoke it and use it
as a medicine for wounds.
The link between smoking and lung
cancer was first discovered in the
1950s. Before this, people believed
that smoking had health benefits.

What’s in a cigarette?
Tobacco is not the only ingredient in cigarettes. There are
also over 4,000 chemicals in a cigarette, and some of them
might surprise you!
Did you know that cigarettes contain
carbon monoxide – the same gas
that comes out of car exhausts?
Or that they contain
acetone, the main
ingredient in nail
polish remover?
Or that they contain formaldehyde, a
chemical used to preserve dead bodies?

What are the effects of smoking?
These photos show specimens of lungs from a non-smoker
(left) and a smoker (right). What differences can you see?
The smoker’s lung is dark
and misshapen. The
chemicals in cigarette
smoke damage the lungs
and cause many diseases
including bronchitis,
emphysema (difficulty
breathing) and cancer.
Smoking reduces the amount of oxygen being absorbed by
the lungs and moving around the body. This is why people
who smoke get out of breath more quickly when they exercise.
