Robot Quick Build Session Transmission Assembly Instructions Produced by Ed Latimer, Team 476 Ken York, Team 476 Ron Markum, Team 1750 Special Thanks to Oklahoma State University College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology Transmission Assembly Instructions Step 1 – Watch the instructional video for assembling the Tough Box transmission on www.andymark.biz Step 2 – Proceed with putting the transmission boxes together. You can use the video in ‘pause’ mode, or you can use this presentation. Parts and Tools Needed for One Transmission Box The small shaft goes in the bearing without any small holes around it in the cover. The side of the bearing with the ridge faces up. The smooth side of this big gear faces up Use the non-mar hammer. Note: If none available, tap with a regular hammer using a block of wood as a cushion. The side of the small gear with the raised hub faces up. The side with the raised hub faces up. A regular hammer can be used to put the Cclip on the shaft. Apply a small amount of grease to the gears. Excess grease can spin off and might ruin the plastic cover’s finish. Spread the grease around by turning the gears. Install both bearings with the ridge side facing down. Snap/push the cover down over the bearings. Tighten the bolts using a medium clutch setting on the cordless drill. Note: Install the 2nd bolt on the opposite corner of the 1st bolt to pull down the cover corners evenly. Make sure the shaft spins free or you’ve made a mistake. Repeat for the 2nd box. Gather these parts and assemble as follows. Square keystock fits between prongs in clip. Push on with a nutdriver or socket. Repeat for 2nd motor. The two ‘open’ holes in the motor plate line up with the screw passage holes in the cover. Use the screws with thread-lock coating to mount the motor. Start the first screw but don’t tighten it yet. Put in the second screw and then tighten both of them. Repeat for the 2nd motor but make a ‘left’ and ‘right’ facing transmission box. Sprocket from kit of parts Gather these parts and assemble as follows. Make sure the gear teeth are on the outside. Be sure and use the washer as it keeps the sprocket from sliding off. Repeat for 2nd box. Leftover parts from each transmission box for an optional 2nd motor and 2nd sprocket in case you want to add them later. The bottom mounting bracket goes on the side closest to the output shaft, the side opposite the motor. Take off the two screws, put on the bracket, and re-tighten them. The top mounting bracket goes on the opposite side. Again, remove two screws to install the bracket. The motor should be on the top half of the box and the output shaft on the bottom half. Repeat for the 2nd motor. Finished product, ready for installation on the frame.
