Proof of identity
It is a legal requirement for financial institutions, such as banks and
insurance companies, to obtain evidence of the identity of their customers
and to keep records of the evidence obtained. We therefore require a copy
of one item from each of the lists below. The items in the first list can be
used to provide proof of name and those in the second list can be used to
provide proof of address.
We cannot proceed with your application until we receive one item
from each list.
We do not expect you to send us your original documents. We would prefer
you to send photocopies instead. Photocopies of original documents must
meet our certification policy. We require certified copies to have been
signed by a person in a position of responsibility. Examples of persons
in a position of responsibility are: your employer, bank officials, doctors,
solicitors, ministers of religion, teachers, social workers, civil servants and
We expect the certifier to:
1. Sign and date the photocopy and state their name.
2.State their profession and either their full business address or their
telephone number.
3. State that they have ‘seen the original’.
Please note, the certifier must not:
1. be related to the applicant/account holder by birth or marriage
2. be a named party on the application/account
3. live at the same address as the applicant/account holder
4. be unemployed or seeking asylum to live in the UK.

List 2 – Proof of address
• Current UK or EEA passport.
•Current UK or EEA photocard driving licence. (if not used as proof
of name).
• Current UK or EEA photocard driving licence.
• Current full UK driving licence (old paper style).
•Letter from Department for Work & Pensions confirming entitlement
to state benefits (issued within the last 3 months).
•HMRC document such as PAYE coding notice or statement of
account (issued within the last 3 months).
• EU or EEA member state identity card.
•Current full UK driving licence (old paper style) (if not used as proof
of name).
•Letter from Department for Work & Pensions confirming
entitlement to state benefits issued within the last 3 months (if not
used as proof of name).
• Recent utility bill (issued within the last 3 months).
• Statement from a bank, building society, mortgage
company or insurance company (issued within the last 3 months).
• Local authority council tax bill for the current year.
