SATEL – Radio networking technology for intelligent traffic systems

INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS
TRANSPORTATION
Modern technologies make driving easier in many ways.
Remote-controlled traffic signs, traffic light priority, passenger
information and real-time weather updates improve road
safety and reduce congestion. This enables traffic, services
and people to change location efficiently and without delay.
SATEL provides wireless communication solutions to handle
data transfer in these devices and systems. Real-time data
transfer based on radio modems improves traffic control
and the accuracy and reliability of public transport services.
INTELLIGENT PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
is one of the fastest developing areas
in technology today. The growing
rate of urbanisation is increasing the
demand for traffic flow.
SATEL technical solution is a wireless communication
between devices and system components. This allows
a flexible approach to design and implementation.
A wireless data network does not need expensive
underground construction work.
Around 60 billion journeys are made every year in
the EU. The estimated number of buses and coaches
is approaching 800,000. When this is added to the
number of private vehicles, it is no wonder that cities
suffer from congestion.
Flexibility adds true value when looking across different
legislative practices and requirements. SATEL has the
qualification both in working practices and in product
portfolio to address very distinctive local requirements.
We have cooperated with system integrators and bus
operators for decades to improve our services within ITS.
Public transport operators are looking for technological
aids to improve their services, optimise driving times and
reduce fuel consumption. ITS provides many ways for
solving these problems.
WIRELESS AND ALWAYS AVAILABLE
One the most important sections in intelligent public
transport is communication. The intelligence is generated
by sharing information between devices and system
components. SATEL provides wireless communication
solutions to handle the data transfer and gathering in
traffic systems.
Our modems are always on line and provide reliable,
real-time data transfer* ranging from tens of metres to
100 kilometres. Radio modems are highly tolerant to
weather conditions and geological disturbances. The
system works even during large events or other special
occasions when other technologies might face difficulties.
SATEL radio data networks are very flexible. They
are easy to maintain and expand even years
after the installation. It is also a smart investment.
The communication is free of charge and works
independently from commercial operators. The user of
the radio data network has full control over their data
communication system all of the time.

TRAFFIC LIGHT PRIORITY
Traffic Light Priority (TLP) is an application of subtle
changes to traffic light timing in order to assist the
passage of public transport. TLP makes public transport
more reliable, faster and more cost effective. It has
little impact on general traffic and it should be almost
completely unnoticeable to observers. It is an inexpensive
way to make public transport more competitive with
private vehicle usage.
TLP is made up of four components. A detection system

VEHICLES
The diagnostic information on the vehicle status
and remote control on service is a valuable tool in
maintaining the best possible service level to customers.

lets the TLP system know where the vehicle requesting
signal priority is located. The detection system
communicates with a priority request generator alerting
the traffic control system that the vehicle would like to
receive priority. One software processes the request and
decides whether and how to grant priority based on the
programmed priority control strategies, while another
manages the system, collects data and generates reports.
REAL-TIME PASSENGER
INFORMATION
The passenger information relies on the Automatic
Vehicle Location (AVL) system using GPS-satellite
navigation and odometer. All vehicles are polled by a
central computer every tenth second. The continuous
