Why do people move?
Think of as many reasons as you can
and Buddy Buzz.
Use your own personal experiences
with moving, if you’ve moved before.
Can you categorize these reasons
into two types?
► What
makes someone
want or need to leave.
 These are called “push
factors”
►Things that cause a
person or family to
want or need to
move from an area.
► What
draws someone
to a place.
 These are called “pull
factors”
►Things that cause a
place to be enticing,
or cause someone to
want or need to
move there.
Push and Pull Factors
► Every
move regardless of how far has some
of these factors involved.
 Some push factors that cause people to leave
can also be a pull factor that is drawing them to
a place.
 Immigrants coming to America faced various
push and pull factors.
The New Immigrants
►
Push Factors
► Pull Factors
 Difficult conditions at home
 New opportunities
 Economic troubles
►Promise of jobs in
►Overcrowding, poverty –
America
Italy, Hungary
►Affordable land
►Couldn’t own enough
►Religious and
land – Croatia, Serbia
political freedom
►Crop failures – Sweden
 The positive image that
 Persecution
America had to many
in Europe
►Discrimination – Ethnic
and Religious – Jews
►“Streets paved with
fleeing Russia
gold”
►Political
Information Accurate?
►
Was all of the information that
the potential immigrants were
getting correct?
 No? What could have been
some of the reasons why?
►
Distance plays a role, as the
further away people are the less
likely they will have had a
chance to interact with the place
in question
 This is called distance decay,
and is represented by the graph
to the right.
Voluntary or Forced?
► What
is the difference between voluntary
and forced migration?
 Voluntary: You have a choice whether to go or
stay.
 Forced: You have no choice but to move.
► Historically
most migration is voluntary.
 In the case of the immigrants is this true?
Its Your Turn…
►
To demonstrate you understand the difference between
push and pull factors as well as what they are you will be
creating your own chart based on a move you have made,
or if you have never moved, where you would move if you
had to.
 Your chart must include the following:
►A
map showing where you moved or might move from and where you
moved or may move to.
► Definitions of both what a push and what a pull factor is.
► A chart detailing what the push and pull factors were or would be for
the move.
► Based on the factors whether your move was forced of voluntary
 Take a look at my example…
