VEX ROBOTICS UNIT 4: AUTONOMOUS ROBOTICS Lesson Objective: Explore the task of designing a robot for an open design brief by sketching and modelling, work in a team focused environment to produce a unique design, and manufacture a final unique solution. Lesson no Age range Duration Lesson 6: Explore the task of designing a robot for an open design brief by sketching and modelling, work in a team focused environment to produce a unique design, and manufacture a final unique solution. 11-16 1 hour Learning outcomes 1. Explored the task of designing and sketching robot ideas 2. Worked in a team to develop a final solution 3. Manufactured a final solution suited for testing against a design brief Time Activities Link to objective 5 mins Students prepare a quick presentation to the class of what sensors can be added to give their design functionality. LO1, 2, 3 10 mins Teacher sets out the design challenge in detail. Objects are set and clarified. The teacher can prepare challenges beforehand or allow students to develop their own. Students brainstorm their robot ideas on the handout. LO1, 2, 3 10 mins Students learn in detail bout different types of robot and the rules that apply to their LO1, 2, 3 form. Simple examples to modify the basic robot form are presented including a conveyor belt and a turn table. 30 mins Students learn more about the zone element to the design challenge. In teams, students brainstorm and begin to design their robot solution, modifying the existing robot they have. . 5 mins Summarise the learning and test pupils as a group/individuals using plenary questioning.
