What is an Extended Project?
This is a piece of work completed over time. It is managed, researched and completed by yourself.
Why do it?
It is excellent independent learning. It develops good coursework skills. It helps prepare you for
Diploma theory work? Universities and colleges like to discuss student interests outside classrooms.
It helps you to complete your personal statement. It allows you to study a topic of interest to
yourself over time.
Who will give me help and support with this work?
Parents, carers, friends and people you contact can all help you with your project. Your Form Tutor
Mentor will also help give guidance and support.
Can I work with friends or does it have to be on my own?
For most students this will be an individual project. Exceptionally there may be good reasons for you
to work together with another student. You will still need to keep a copy of your role and
contributions to the topic.
Does it all have to all be in writing?
It should contain between 1000 and 5000 words but there may be good reasons for it being less or in
a different format e.g. a video or a multi-media presentation.
Is it compulsory?
Yes for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10. Optional for Year 11.

Section One- Choosing your Topic
In this section you will think about what interests you and choose a topic you would like to know
more about.
Make a list of things which interest you.
( Tip; this could be a topic you have studied at school; or something that you do as a hobby OR
something you’ve always wanted to know more about!)
You now need to narrow down your options to just one!
The topic I have chosen to research is:
I have chosen this topic because:
You now need to decide how you will present your project. In the space below say how you will
present your final project and try to give reasons why.
Section Two – Project Objectives
Well done! You have chosen your project area and now you need to choose some research
questions to help give your project some focus. Don’t worry, as you can always add to these as you
go along.
Top Tip: before you start researching your project just get your teacher to look through your
research questions!!
E.G.s
‘How are cartoons and animated films made’
‘Why were dinosaurs wiped out?’
‘ The treatment of women in the media’
‘The best football team of all time?’
‘How has fashion changed over the past 20 years and what influences have made these changes
happen?’
‘How does an Olympic champion train for world competition?’
‘A study of horses’
‘What was it like to live in Wellington before the Industrial Revolution?’
‘The story of Street dance’
‘Computer programming’
‘What is string theory and does this help explain our universe?’
