Desert
Rats in
big win
From Back Page
Players from Central Bulls,
Wests and United all came together for the clash with players from the ladder-leading
Vikings unavailable, but it did
not seem to faze the side as a
dominant performance saw
the Rats run out as 18-point
winners.
In the first representative
fixture for both teams this season, the opening exchanges
were scrappy as both sides attempted to feel each other out,
but it was Alice Springs who
struck first in the ninth minute
to take an early 6-0 lead.
The Brumbies answered
quickly with their only try of
the first half but that just inspired the Desert Rats into action, piling on 22 more
unanswered points to got into
the sheds at half-time with a
commanding 28-4 lead.
Facing a tough task to fight
back from the big margin, the
Brumbies struck first after
half-time as they scored just
three minutes into the half to
reduce the margin to 18 points.
Just as it did in the first half,
Brumbies crossing the tryline
sparked the Desert Rats into
action as the Alice Springsbased side crossed for the next
two tries of the match to extend their lead to a commanding 28 points.
The Brumbies continuously
pressured Alice Springs’ defence in an attempt to work
their way back into the match
and eventually crossed for
their third try of the afternoon,
but each time they scored
Alice Springs found a way to
answer straight away.
Two consolation tries to the
Brumbies towards the end of
the game closed the margin
somewhat and the Tennant
Creek-based side never gave
up fighting throughout the
clash, but the Desert Rats’ class
proved too much in the end as
they held on for the comfortable win.
Alice Springs five-eighth
Wayd Nibbs was named man
of the match after a dominant
display from the playmaker,
crossing for one try and continuously pressuring the defence throughout the day.
Phil Childs and Ryan Jones
also proved influential in the
win as they both crossed for
two tries each while Josh Awesomeness crossed for two tries
for the Brumbies.
