Volunteer Role Description
This role is a great opportunity to make a huge difference to the life of a carer
by providing a much-needed lifeline
Aims of the role
To support carers by sitting with the ‘cared for’ person in their own home for up to 3
hours, ensuring they are safe and comfortable. This gives the carer the chance for
respite within or outside the home.
What will I be doing?
 Offering conversation and company to the cared for person
 Making drinks and ensuring the cared for person is comfortable
 Being a presence in the home in case of accident or emergency
 This role does not include personal care or lifting
What skills or qualifications will I need?
 Reliability
 The ability to communicate in a warm, caring and friendly way
 Patience and understanding
 To be non-judgmental and sensitive to the needs of the carer and the cared
for person
 Confidence and adaptability
 A car and driving license would be an advantage, but are not essential
What is the time commitment?
 Hours are variable depending on the need of the carer, but we would ask for a
commitment of at least one session per month (3 hours plus travelling time).
 It is useful if a volunteer is available for at least 12 months
What support and training will be provided?
 A full induction
 Initial meeting with the carer, cared for person and Volunteer Coordinator to
enable a good match to be made
 We periodically hold training sessions for sitting service volunteers, although
you can start volunteering with us prior to receiving training
 Regular support meetings with the Volunteer Manager
 Travel expenses paid
 A monthly e-newsletter for volunteers
An Enhanced CRB check will be required for this role which will be paid for by the organisation. We
will provide the necessary forms and can help you with the application process.
