Week 1 Demonstrate that we are all scientists.
Scientists inquire, hypothesize, investigate and test
their ideas.
Life Sciences
Week 2 Explore plants as living things: Define living
and nonliving things. Identify the needs of living
things: air, water, nutrients, living space and light.
Week 3 Learn the parts of plants and seeds: Examine
plants and seeds and look at their similarities and
differences. Label the parts of plants and seeds: root,
stem, leaf, flower, seed, seed coat, and embryo.
Week 4 Exploring plants as food: Recognize that
food is a basic need of plants and animals for energy.
We eat stems, roots, leaves and flowers.
Critical Questions:
What are the needs of living things?
How can you tell if something is living?
What are the parts of a seed?
What are the parts of a plant?
Give examples of food that is a root, stem or leaf.

Week 1 Explore animals as living things. Animal
characteristics: move, grow, eat, drink and reproduce.
Needs of animals are: air, water, food, living space
and shelter.
Week 2 Learn about the life cycles of animals and
how they adapt to their environment to stay alive.
Week 3 Learn about the different types of animals:
mammal, bird, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and insects.
Week 4 Examine food chains and learn about
camouflage, predators and prey.
Critical Questions:
What are the characteristics of animals?
What do animals need to survive?
What is a food chain?
Give examples of the different kinds of animals.
What is the difference between a predator and its
prey?
