ABOUT THE CONFERENCE CALL FOR PAPERS COGNITIVE APPROACHES TO LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE Papers are invited from members of Faculty, Research Scholars and Post Graduate students of English for deliberations at the seminar. Humanistic reading of literature was torn to shreds in the later half of the 20th century so much so that defending it has become a matter of acute intellectual embarrassment. But such reading has stayed alive and its importance is demonstrated by studies in the field of "Cognitive Sciences".This conference is organized to give the participants orientation in current studies in this field which connect Literature, Cognition and Neurosciences. A common belief is that, as we believe, the study of the mind is one of the best avenues to the study of literature, and so we hold that the study of literature is one of the best ways to study the mind. We can achieve new insights into both individual texts and the cultural milieus by recognizing texts as historicallyspecific records of human minds in action. Knowledge developed by cognitive science about subjects such as perception, metaphor, concept formation, and categorization can be recruited to support recognizably literary and historical kinds of scholarship and criticism. This conference attempts to open avenues for the study of human mental capacities at work in literary texts, and view this as one of the most direct and illuminating methodologies available to cognitive science.
