Potted plants and hanging baskets are pretty common and during the heat of spring and summer you can sometimes see the symptoms of a lack of water. Brown and drooping leaves, prematurely dead blooms, and dry stems are all signs the plant hasn’t had enough water. Water is a constant need for these plants. If you catch them with any of the above signs, dump some water on the dirt and within a couple hours they look bright and vibrant again. But if another few days pass without adding more water, they go back to looking and being near death. This can be compared to our spiritual health as well. The Bible tells us that God will pour water upon those that are thirsty (Is 44:3). The difference between us and those plants is we have to get that water ourselves. Steady and daily times in prayer, worship, and the Word keep us replenished with the “water of life” spoken of in Rev. 21:6. If we only get “watered” on Sundays during church, at some point during the week our spirit becomes dry and low like the leaves of a thirsty plant. And sometimes, near death. Keep your spirit watered and healthy. Stay in the Word. Have daily times of prayer and worship. As gardeners will tell you, it’s easier to maintain a plant than to bring one back from the dead.
