Objectives:
- Show and measure a decrease of the oxygen contained in the expired air compared
to the inspired air.
- Determine the volume of O2 consumed.
1) Materials
- Foxy console / Réf. 485 000
- Ventilation sensor / Réf. 482 109
- O2 sensor / Réf. 482 039
- Oximeter probe / Réf. 453 001
- Human respiration chamber / Réf. 453 078
- Mouthpieces / Réf. 453 009
- Antibacterial filter / Réf. 453 046
2) Setting
First make the mounting of the “sensor-chamber” system.
- Connect the mouthpiece to the antibacterial filter.
- Connect the antibacterial filter to the ventilation sensor (use a silicone link).
- By the mean of another silicone link, connect the ventilation sensor to the Y
connector.
- Connect the hose to allow part of the expired air to the Y-connector.
- Connect the flexible hose to the human respiration enclosure.
- Turn on the Foxy console.
- Plug the oximeter.
- Connect the probe to the sensor.
The installation is now complete.
See the ventilation sensor instruction sheet for further information.
3) Software configuration
- Connect the console to the computer: the software appears automatically.
- Select the module “Generalist SVT”.
- Drag and drop the sensor “ventilation” onto the ordinate axis.
- In the tab “Caliber”, select Volume.
- Select the class +/- 100 L.
- Drag and drop the “Oximeter” sensor onto the ordinate axis.
- In the tab “Caliber”, click on Air.
- In the Setup tab, enter 20; 9% as a value and click on Set.
- Insert the probe into the chamber.
- Drag and drop the time “icon” onto the abscissa axis.
- Enter “4-minutes” for acquisition time and 481 points.
4) Acquisition
The acquisition is split in to parts, the first one at rest, the second during an effort.
- Click on
- Eventually enter a name for the experience.
- Stay at rest during the first 2 minutes.
- During the second phase flex your legs every 10 seconds during 2 minutes.
5) Results
See Figure 1
Figure 1: Evolution of oxygen rate exhaled and of the volume of exhaled air versus
time.
6) Data Processing
Let’s consider that the level of oxygen in inspired air is 20.9%.
The oxygen rate consumed is equal to the difference between the rate of inspired air
and the rate of expired air.
To get the volume of oxygen (VO2), then multiply by the volume of expired air (V).
We obtain: VO2 = (20,9 – O2 rate) x V /100
Let’s enter this formula in the spreadsheet:
- Click on the tab “Table” in the main window, three columns containing the
measurements are already present.
- Double-click on the D column.
- In the window, enter “VO2” as Value and “L” as unit.
- In the first box, enter = ((20.9 - B1) x C1) / 100.
Let’s consider that the oxygen rate is in B column and the volume in C column.
Copy this formula in all the cells.
Thus we obtain the value of the volume of oxygen consumed. Click on the tab “Chart”
to display the graph. See figure 2 for an example.
