2. Readout stability and current status
3. Future plans

Timeline Summary (1)
• Prague meeting – starting point
– All SRBs sending data with trigger matching firmware (few holes)
– Firmware problem: data corruption
• padding + repeated words + non-smooth channel activity profile
• 4 Sep: first notice of HV module problem
– No HV on view Y station 4
– “Module is bad” report in ISEG software
– “Clear events” solves the problem, HV restored until next failure
• 7 Sep: power-cut → SRB stopped sending data in-time
• 8 Sep: SRB id 23 replaced, HV connector problem fixed
• 9 Sep: New trigger manager firmware (TRGMv6)
– Delay configuration fixed
– SRB data sending to PC farm recovered
– For the first time: no holes in the readout

Timeline Summary (2)
• 15 Sep: frontend interface firmware test (FEv9)
– Attempt to solve data synchronization
– Not successful, reverted back to FEv7
• 16 Sep (MD): HV module replacement (station 4, view Y)
– Stable, but with a problem on channel 13 (always “ramping”)
• 16 Sep (MD): noise scan + new threshold settings
• 18 Sep: connection between covers and SRBs lost
– Reason unknown (power glitch?)
– SRB stopped to send data in-time
– Power cycle on VME crates (+ setup) solved the problem
• 21 Sep: connection to one cover lost and recovered

Timeline Summary (3)
• 23 Sep (MD): noise scan + new threshold setting
• 23 Sep: event manager (trig. match.) firmware test (EMv5)
– Packets not OK → PC farm crash; firmware reverted
• 24 Sep: 50% beam intensity, Straw readout OK (no crashes)
• 24 Sep: event manager (trig. match.) firmware test (EMv5)
– Firmware got stuck; firmware reverted to v4
• 29 Sep: Beam problem, QUAD 043.169 failure
– Cover connectivity lost (all stations)
• 30 Sep (MD): VME crate power cycle (+ setup)
→ everything recovered

Timeline Summary (4)
• 1 Oct: event manager (trig. match.) firmware test (EMv5.1)
– Padding and repeated words in ethernet part fixed
• 1 Oct: Power cut →configuration lost
• 2 Oct: EMv5.1 firmware installed on 31/32 SRBs
– SRB id 1 did not work with new firmware
– Padding fixed, repeated words at the end of packet fixed
– Data quality improved, still major data corruption (non-smooth profile)
• 6 Oct: new trigger manager firmware (TRGMv7) installed
– Important fix of trigger FIFO reset → stability improved
• 9 Oct: event manager (trig. match.) firmware (EMv6)
– Most of the data corruption problem solved
– Works very well at 40% intensity

Readout Stability
• When the system is set up and no external factor (beam, powercut problem) intervenes, it is stable
• However, it is quite difficult to set up the system properly
– Usually the procedure involves power cycle on LV of covers and/or SRB
VME crates
– After SRB power cycle:
• Links not aligned automatically, sometimes data from some front-end chips
are not coming, triggers not sent correctly from TRGM
• Latency scan is needed cycle due to random shifts of trigger-data offset: not
understood at the moment
– We are going to work on proper reset procedure
• Cover T0 shifting at “start run”
– Can be recovered offline by measuring Cover T0 for each run
– Not possible to use in trigger algorithms (L1, L2) → must be fixed

Current Status and Future Plans
• Straw readout system is now in quite good shape and
should work at higher beam intensities
– Missing feature (Peter is working on it):
MEP factor > 1, important for PC farm stability at high L0 rates
• Foreseen stability improvements:
– FE interface firmware (v9), new Cover firmware
• Thresholds are set according to the equal 100Hz noise
rate on all channels
– Full noise scan information is saved for analysis and future
threshold setting procedure development
– Threshold tests as discussed in Prague can be now performed
