C GRADE CRISIS
The last round before Christmas could be described as most bleak for St George Cricket Club. The
previously undefeated A grade could not chase down a pitifully low score at Morphettville Park while the
C grade could not muster anywhere near enough players to take on South Road IV at Clovelly Park PS
and as a consequence forfeited.
The B grade had an extraordinary match at Urrbrae against top side, Coromandel III, where Andy Farrell
comprehensively bowled the boys to victory. Good as this was, the headline above is worthy of more
pressing thought.
Suffice is to say, the C grade is a dead man walking if every club member (1) does not take
responsibility for recruiting and (2) ensure they maximise their on field attendance.
Granted these edicts are easier said than done particularly in older players where injury and capacity to
recruit younger players are clear obstacles.
However, members of the committee will not go through another season of agonising post Wednesday
selection trauma where they are continually bemused at the number of withdrawals after selections and
then the struggle to reformat and refocus our C grade side.
In late December this got all too much.
If player numbers do not improve over the later half of this season and through the winter leading up to
team nominations, St George Cricket Club will have no option but to field two teams next year – an A
grade of similar skill and standing with a B grade being able to rotate 15 or so players throughout the
season.
This scenario is not ideal.
In short, the situation demands immediate attention as the club struggles to breathe life back into a C
grade that has taken many hard knocks yet remained totally loyal.

Wednesday Night Raffle
After Phil Richards saluted with an $80 win on 28 October, the prize jackpotted all the way through to 16
December where it was determined that the $140 booty would be split into 3 prizes of $60, $40 & $40. A
controversial draw saw Jimmy Walker win the first two draws and Neil Bullock the third draw – with
Jimmy diverting $30 of his voucher to Chris Littleboy. All three are deserved winners as they are regular
attendees at club sponsor, Astor Hotel. See editorial for further details
Christmas Show – 19 December
A great night presented by Amanda, Luke & Scott – so thanks for that. Perhaps the highlight was
Broomy taking another spray at a Hall – this time not big Wayne but Jason, who collected a nice $24
booty for his efforts

Unfortunately the C grade had to forfeit in round 6 so the raffle prizes are jackpotted to round 7 where
the winning prize will be $150 and the runner up $75.
History:
The raffle has been running since the 2002-03 season. For the first two seasons, there was only one
raffle prize awarded of $75 before reverting to the current format of paying a runner up prize of $25 as
well. While not all prize winners have been sourced mainly due to the shabby record keeping practices
of past Treasurer Rose T!!!, the following list gives an indication of those who have been fortunate.

The statistics for all seasons have been updated over Christmas where relevant and time permitted. If
the page is marked with “0610” at the foot, for example, the page is dated Round 6 Season 2009-10. A
marking of “1109” at the foot will indicate that the page is dated Round 11 Season 2008-09.
Some interesting detail follows:
700th GAME
The club’s 700th game will be played in Round 7 and will officially be the B grade match against Plympton
Footballers III at Warradale Primary School. A win for the Dragons would be handy here to celebrate
this milestone.
1000 RUNS
Nathan O’Neil became the 35th player to score 1000 runs for the club when compiling a fine 64 in Round
4 v Southern II. Warwick Holen looms as the 36th player as he sits precariously on 998 runs.
Mikey Szczepanik is now 2nd on the all time run list with 2740 and fast closing in on Teesa!
CONSECUTIVE 50s
Mikey also became the 9th player to make 3 or more consecutives 50s in Rounds 1, 2 & 3 compiling 63,
78 & 88* against South Road III, Keswick IV and International CSA.
200 RUNS BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Mikey again (268) and Layton Gould (201) became the 45th & 46th players to achieve this milestone.
DUCKS
Ducks have been plentiful in the first half of the season – unfortunately.
The club has now recorded 980 ducks with 29 being effected this season – the 1000th milestone is not
that far away – who will be the lucky batter?!??!!
Andrew “Butch” Fitzroy has joined Ryan Simpson at the top of the “Ducks Table” with 29 – and is ranked
number 1 on %!!! Dale Seadon with 3 consecutive ducks leading into Christmas is climbing but no doubt
the New Year turning over will bring brighter things for “Chook”.
Warwick “Todd TA Dutchman” Holen opened the season with 2 consecutive Golden Ducks having never
achieving one previously. He was joined later by Dave Cluley, Trent Cluley and Time Holt in the one ball
club!
MOST FIFTIES IN AN ININNGS
The A grade match against Keswick IV in round 2 saw the 19th occasion where three or more individual
50s were scored in an innings with Mikey Szczepanik 78, Scott Keeley & Layton Gould, 54 apiece.
PARTNERSHIPS
Nothing to report 100 or over as yet as players through all grades have consistently struggled to build
big scores. 17 partnerships of 50+ are indicative of some starts with O’Neil N & Green P v Belair II and
Szczepanik M & Holt T v ICC SA managed partnerships of 97.
5 WICKETS IN AN INNINGS
Andrew Farrell became the 6th St George player to take 5 wickets in an innings on debut in round 3
against Mitchell Park III.
One of the members of that club, Corey Goodwin, took 6-67 on debut against Sheidow Park at Sheidow
Park Primary School on day 1 of round 1 in October 1994. His brother was wicket keeper. Both players
were not seen again at the club after this day!
Warwick Holen achieved a miraculous first taking 5-34 against Belair III in Round 4 while Farrell
achieved the feat again in round 6 taking 5-13!!
