Welcome to English 10-2, the first of the three, 5-credit English courses required for a High School
Diploma. This course will develop and refine your skills of communication in all six language arts.
Students become confident and competent users of all six language arts through many opportunities to
listen and speak, read and write and view and represent in a variety of combinations and relevant
contexts. All language arts are interrelated and interdependent; facility in one strengthens and supports
the other.
Alberta Learning Outcomes for English Language Arts:
Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to:
 explore thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences
 comprehend and respond personally and critically to oral, print and other text of
communication
 manage ideas and information
 create oral, print, visual and multimedia texts to enhance the clarity and artistry of
communication
 respect, support and collaborate with others
My Philosophy of Teaching
I believe that a student’s education should be challenging, rewarding and interesting. Students and
teachers should work together and discover new ideas and philosophies in an interactive and
enriched environment. I believe that the learning environment should be established to help ALL
students, if they are willing, to find success.

Cell Phones
It is now school policy here at LTCHS, and in most schools in our district as well as other districts,
that the classroom is basically known as a “Cell phone Free Zone.” The LTCHS policy indicates
that students are only allowed to have cell phones with hem before school, at lunch or after school.
Students are not to have their cell phones in their possessions throughout the school day; therefore,
if Mrs. Klassen or I see a cell phone we will confiscate it!!
The policy to retrieve your phone is as follows:
1st offence:
The cell phone is confiscated and given to the grade level administrator (Mr. Demale).
The student will need to meet with the grade level administrator to get the phone back.
2nd offence:
The cell phone is confiscated and given to the grade
level administrator (Mr. Demale). The student’s
parent/guardian will have to come in and meet with
the administrator to get the phone back.
3rd + offence:
Will be seen as defiance and will be dealt with through the discipline cycle
Attendance and Participation




Regular attendance is a necessity, and verification is required for all absences.
IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY TO COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS MISSED DUE TO ABSENCE.
Participation in class will also be a key determining factor of success.
The Honour Code/Plagiarism Policy (see Student Agenda) must be adhered to by all students.
Late Assignment Policy
Because assignment completion is critical to a student’s success in any given course, teachers at Lindsay
Thurber Comprehensive High School expect that each student completes every assignment in a course.
Students who do not complete assignments will be assigned consequences, which may include lunch hour
detentions, study hall, opportunity room suspensions or other consequences deemed necessary by the
teacher. During these consequences, the student will be expected to complete the unfinished work. With
the student, teachers in the ELA department will make every reasonable attempt to ensure assignment
completion for each student.
***If you find yourself unable to finish an assignment due to mitigating
circumstances please come and talk to me. We all have times in our lives
where something happens quite literally beyond our control. If you have
an incident such as this, come and see me and together we will come up
with a solution. Relax, I am human too and understand that stuff happens!
ON THAT NOTE…PLEASE REALIZE THAT WORK AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ARE NOT
CONSIDERED TO BE MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES!!
