Round-Robin Rules

CONDUCT OF THE MARCH AND NOVEMBER ROUND-ROBIN
EVENT
Revised – March 19, 2015
Game:
1. The event format is “best net score of two” (four ball) match play event. Each
flight will have four (4) 2-man teams. Each team will play a nine-hole match play (four
ball) match against the three (3) other teams in their flight.
2. The event will be played on two days, two (2) Wednesday’s in a row. Two (2)
nine-hole match play matches will be played on the first Wednesday, and one (1) ninehole match play match will be played on the following Wednesday.
3. The total points earned in their three (3) matches, out of 30 total possible
points, will determine the flight winners. At the end of the three (3) matches, if two or
more teams tie, the tie(s) will be broken by comparing the results of the head to head
matches. If this does not break the tie(s), results will be compared hole by hole, starting
with the lowest white tee course handicap hole that both/all teams played, then
proceeding to the second lowest course handicap hole, and so forth.
4. Flight winning teams will have a best net score of two Shootout Competition.
The shoot-out for each flight winning team will start mid-morning of the second
Wednesday at the conclusion of the one (1) nine-hole match. See below for the Shootout
details.
5. Prizes will be $200 in cash for the team finishing first in the Shootout, $100 in
cash for the team finishing second in the Shootout, and $50 in cash for the team finishing
third in the Shootout. The 1st place flight winners will win sweeps (the amount
depending on participation). In addition, a voluntary traditional closest to the pin (CTP)
contest ($1 entry fee) will be conducted during the first two (2) rounds. At the end of the
Shootout, the President of the RMGA will distribute the prizes.
Entries:
Sign up as a 2-man team in the RMGA sign-up book in the Pro Shop, (see
Special Condition Number 3 below). If you wish to play and do not have a partner,
there will be a place to sign up, in the RMGA sign-up book in the Pro shop. The Pro
Shop will try to pair you with another golfer. The entry fee is $15 for the entire event;
charged to your account. Note, if anyone or any team drops out, his/their spot will be
filled by moving later entries up, keeping the order of signing up the same. Teams will
not be broken up during this process. Players in an incomplete flight on the sign-up
deadline day will not be able to play in the event.
Tees & Shotgun start
1. This event will be from the white tees. Those eligible to play from the black or
red tees (5 or more red or black tee scores out of the last 20 in the handicap computer)
should do so. If a match involves both teams playing from the same tee color, full
handicaps will be used for both teams. If the match includes players playing from
different tees, the computer used to generate the scorecard will make the appropriate
changes in the handicaps according to the Rules of Golf.
2. All four teams in a flight will start on the same hole the first Wednesday to
make switching opponents after the first 9-hole match convenient.
No-shows and cancellations
1
1. If a player does not show up for any of the three matches his partner will be
permitted to complete the match(es) as a single player. No substitutions will be allowed.
2. If a team does not show up for any of the three (3) matches, the team they would
have played will play against par with full handicap, i.e., best net score birdie or better,
one (1) point, best net score par one-half (1/2) point, best net score bogie or worse zero
(0) point. If the team gets five (5) points or better, they will have won the “match” and
will receive one (1) more point.
3. If a team cancels entirely, all of the other three teams will continue to compete,
but when any team is scheduled to play against the team that canceled, they will play
against par, as noted above.
Handicaps:
For all matches, all players play off the course handicap of the lowest handicap
(adjusted for black and red tee players, if necessary) member of the foursome (who then
plays scratch). The official score cards made up by the Pro Shop for each match will have
the handicap “dots'” adjusted accordingly.
During the “Better Net Score of Two” Shootout, as recommended by the USGA,
each member will receive his full (white, black, or red tee) nine (9)-hole handicap. For
example, if a player’s 18-hole handicap were 26, he would have a nine (9)-hole handicap
of 13.
Players’ handicaps on the date of any match will be used, Section 9-2b and
Decision 9-2b/10, USGA Handicap Guide.
Posting of Scores:
For the first two (2) matches, the two 9-holes scores should be combined and an 18hole score (ESC corrected) posted. The one 9-hole match on the second Wednesday
should NOT be posted. See item 3 under Scoring and Scorecards below for how to score
this event. These are NOT tournament scores.
Lunch:
Lunch is on your own both days.
Special Conditions:
1. The Golf Professional and the Event Committee will organize the competition
into flights and settle any rules questions.
2. The competition shall be conducted using a shotgun start. Starting holes for
each team to be determined by lot.
3. This event must be conducted in flights of 4 teams or 8 players. In other
words, 4 flights of 32 players, 5 flights of 40 players, 6 flights of 48 players, or 7
flights of 56 players, etc. are needed. If your team is just over any of those limits,
you will not be able to play unless we are able to find additional players, SO SIGN
UP EARLY when the sign up sheet is available.
4. The round robin flight winners will participate in a “Best Net Score of Two”
Shootout to be held immediately after the one (1) 9-hole match on the second Wednesday
of the event. The Pro Shop personnel who are responsible for determining handicaps,
judging who is “away,” scoring, and evaluating “chip off” performance, will conduct the
Shootout.
All flight winners will play starting at Hole #1. If more than five (5) teams
qualify, The Pro Shop will decide how to divide the teams into groups, with not more
2
than five (5) teams in one group. If the teams are split into groups, the first group will
play the first hole then wait on # 1 green tee for the second group to catch up. All of the
teams’ net best scores will be compared and no more than five (5) teams will continue.
Ties would be broken by chip-offs at the # 1 green.
After hole # 1, one team will be eliminated per hole, with the event being decided
on hole # 5. Except on the last hole (see below) ties will be broken by a “chip-off.” In a
“chip-off”, the team can designate which team member will attempt the chip and the
results of each chip will be concealed from the other “chippers.” This choice is to be
made on each hole where a chip is required. In the case of multiple chips, the same player
does not have to hit both chips.
If a tie occurs on the last hole, the two teams that tie will continue to play until one
team wins a hole outright or two more holes are played. “Chip offs” will not be used to
break ties on the hole # 5, but will be used if the contest reaches hole # 7. If chip-offs are
needed to decide a winner on hole # 7, both players from both teams will chip. The best
chip for each team will be used to decide the winning team. The decision as to which
team would chip first will be decided by a “tee toss.” The team that chips second will not
be permitted to watch the first team’s chips.
Scoring and Scorecards:
1. Each player is responsible for verifying the accuracy of his handicap. The
player’s handicap will be printed on the scorecard, but each player retains the
responsibility for its accuracy.
2. Each team will keep the score of their competitors. Scores will be kept as gross
scores (for handicap scoring purposes) and the better net score recorded for each hole and
the points earned for that hole. There is one point per hole. If your team wins a hole it
earns one point. If your team halves a hole it earns 1/2 point. If your team loses a hole it
earns zero for that hole. There is one additional point awarded for winning the 9-hole
match. THE TOTAL NUMBER OF POINTS FOR EACH MATCH IS 10 WHEN
ALL MEMBERS ARE PLAYING. Example: Team CD won 5 holes and team AB won
3 holes and 1 hole was halved. Team AB earns 3 points plus 1/2 point for a total of 3-1/2.
Team CD earns 5 points plus 1/2 point plus 1 additional point for winning the match, for
a total of 6-1/2. Team CD totals are 6-1/2 points to 3-1/2 points for team AB, for a total
of 10 points for the match.
3. For any hole where a player’s next shot was conceded, the score he should
record for that hole is what he most likely would have had. Example: A player lays three
(3) on the green, twenty (20) feet from the hole, and the putt is conceded. The player’s
score for posting is five (5) as he would most likely have needed two (2) putts. When a
hole is conceded or not played, the player’s score for handicap purposes is par plus the
handicap strokes the player has been given on that hole. See section 4 of the USGA
Handicap System Guide.
4. Although a hole may be conceded, in order to earn as many points as possible,
teams should complete all 9 holes, even if the match is decided earlier in the round.
5. After the completion of the match, each team will review the card with the
scorer, attest to its accuracy, and turn the scorecard into the Pro Shop. Be sure to write
your gross score (with ESC) on the scorecard as the Rules and Handicap Subcommittee
of the Competition Committee might review it.
* In the case of inclement weather:
1) If the shootout cannot start, it will be held at 9:30 am on a Saturday selected by
the Pro Shop, most likely the Saturday following the conclusion of the event.
3
2) If the shootout is interrupted by inclement weather, the remaining players will
meet at the first hole at 9:30 am on a Saturday selected by the Pro Shop, most likely the
Saturday following the interruption and the shootout will continue there.
