Physical Activity Ideas: Making use of
outdoor space - let’s get creative!
As the summer days begin to stretch out and the weather gets warmer, Super Troopers with
Laya Healthcare has some ideas for you and your class to get active outside making use of
outdoor spaces.
‘Let’s move it!’
Ask each child to choose their favourite piece of equipment from the school’s PE collection.
Gather all the equipment together and head to a local park or green space where there’s lots
of room. Arrange the class into small groups, asking each group to create a relay race with the
chosen equipment of their members, e.g. a relay race where pupils have to jog over a skipping
rope (laid on the ground straight ahead from the starting point) while balancing a bean bag on
their heads. Try out each team’s relay race as a class. For younger pupils, you can create the
relay race ideas as a class.
‘Parkercise’
Bring your class to a local park (or green space) for some ‘parkercise’ – exercise in the park,
with a twist. Head out for a class walk but after every five minutes or so (you can vary this
time depending on the age of pupils involved), stop and exercise with a fun activity for about
one minute. Then continue and repeat for the duration of your walk. Base your stops around
certain locations with features you can include in your exercises, e.g. areas with trees, hedges,
marked pitches, etc.
Try some of these fun park exercises on your stops:
• Run to the nearest tree and back and repeat (this could be done in teams, each team
taking a turn to do the activity).
• Find five different types of trees and run around each of them and back to the starting
point (you can try this in teams too).
• If there are marked pitches in the park, use the lines to create a running challenge, e.g.:
»» Players run to the nearest line and back, then run to next line and back and so on
until the farthest line is reached.

• You can also make use of the larger open spaces for doing
simple exercises on the spot, e.g. jogging on the spot,
Jumping Scissors, etc.

»» Players have to run and jump over each line until they reach the last line.

‘Have a ball’ in the park!
Head to a local park, making use of the wide spaces to play some volleyball games as a
class. Divide the class into teams of about 5 players each (depending on class size). Set up
three volleyball ‘courts’ by marking lines with cones (the line signifying the volleyball net).
Alternatively, if there are pitches already marked with lines, you may be able to use these
instead. Then all you need is a lightweight ball like a beach ball. Ask each
team to stand on opposite sides of the marked line. Players pass the
ball to team members- keeping it off the ground- and when they’re
ready, hit it over to the other team’s side. If the other team lets the
ball fall on the ground over their side, the first team scores a point.
Super Troopers with Laya Healthcare hopes you and your class have lots
of fun getting active outdoors this summer!
