Honors Biology Summer Assignment 2017 For all students (freshmen and sophomores) entering Honors Biology in the 2017-2018 school year Welcome to honors biology! To help you be ready for the school year please complete the following work this summer. 1. Assignment 1: Use this link http://www.phschool.com/science/biology_place/glossary/index.html to look up each word from the list (below) and make hand written (not typed) flash cards on 3 by 5 inch, or similar, index cards. Use the flash cards to study the words and their meanings. There will be a quiz on these words (word meanings, not the origin) the first week of class. The flash cards will be collected or checked the day of the quiz and graded as a homework assignment. Follow this example for making the cards. Please number all cards and put your name on the first card. Front of the card-vocabulary word and card number only Macromolecule #15 Back of the card, top for the word origin information if provided, bottom of the card for the definition From the Greek makros meaning large and the Latin diminutive for mass A giant molecule formed by the joining of smaller molecules, usually by condensation synthesis. Polysaccharides, proteins and nucleic acids are macromolecules 2. Assignment 2: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/blogs/secretlife/video-profiles/ a. Go to the above web site. There you will find of dozens of scientists listed. If you click on their name you will be linked to a page with more information and short videos about each scientist. Select two scientists that interest you. Read about them and watch the videos about them. (Please look over the long list before you make your selection, they seem to be in no particular order!) b. Paragraph 1. Summarize the information about the first scientist you selected. What is their name and what do they work on? Do they have a “non-science” interest or hobby? Did they have any particular obstacles to overcome? Did they have a particular moment of inspiration? What did you find interesting or inspirational about them? c. Paragraph 2. Summarize the information for the 2nd scientist (use the above guidelines). d. Paragraph 3. Describe two personal qualities that you think scientists should have. Why do you think these qualities are needed in science? You do not need to do any research other than profiling the two scientists in paragraphs one and two. e. Do not type your assignment, please write it on loose leaf paper. This is a graded assignment that is due the first week of school. I will not give a length requirement but please use complete sentences and paragraphs numbered as directed above, and answer the question/prompts in good detail. 3. These two assignments should be completed without assistance from others, when you put your name on an assignment it means that you did the work. Please email me if you have questions, I will check my email periodically: [email protected] 4.
