Setting General Options

Set General options
Use the General options to specify formatting for all your instant messages and other overall settings for Microsoft
Lync 2010 communications software.
Open General options
From the Lync main window, you can open the General options in one of two ways:

Click the Options button, and then click General.

Next to the Options button, click the Show Menu arrow, click Tools, clickOptions, and then click General.
Set instant message format
The General options under Instant messages determine how text appears in the instant messaging (IM) window.
You can choose to display graphical emoticons in messages when users type key combinations such as:
:)
If you choose to show emoticons, this key combination appears as a smiley emoticon in the conversation window.
You can also choose to distinguish between parties’ entries in an IM conversation by using alternating background
shading.
The settings you can specify in the Change Font dialog box apply to only the text that you type in instant messages.
You can also temporarily change your font settings in a particular instant message by clicking the Change text button
in the lower right of the conversation window.
SET INSTANT MESSAGE FORMAT

Open General options, and then do any of the following:

To show emoticons in instant messages, under Instant messages, select the Show emoticons in instant
messages check box. To display the typographical equivalents instead of emoticons, clear the check box.

To use different background shading when the writer changes, select the Show an alternating background color
for messages in the conversation check box.

To change the font of the text that you type in instant messages, click theChange Font button. In the Change
Font dialog box, select a font, style, size, font effects, color, and script. Then, click OK.
Set language options
If you have multiple language versions of Lync 2010 installed, you can select the language that you want
under Language.
Set quality options
If your organization has enabled the feature, you can choose to participate in the Microsoft Customer Experience
Improvement Program (CEIP). If you opt to participate, your computer or device automatically sends information to
Microsoft about how you use certain products. Information from your computer is combined with other CEIP data to
help Microsoft solve problems and improve the products and features customers use most often.

To participate in the CEIP, open General options, and then select theAllow Microsoft to collect information
about how I use Lync 2010check box.
Set logging options
Logs are used by system administrators to collect, analyze, and save data. A system administrator might ask you to
turn on either of the two logging options to do troubleshooting. If you’re not asked, you don’t need to be concerned
with these options.

Open General options, and then select or clear the Turn on logging in Lync and Turn on Windows Event
logging for Lync checkboxes, based on your system administrator’s request.
