SHORT & CERTIFICATE COURSES WITS PLUS TECHNICAL PRESENTATION SKILLS Join us on the Wits Campus for our evening class in Technical Presentation Skills, offered over 14 weeks in two hour sessions. The course is offered at the University of the Witwatersrand in lecture format. You will be guided through this programme by a certified World Class Speaking Coach. TARGET AUDIENCE The course will be of value to any person who wishes to learn more about making technical presentations. Anyone who makes any type of presentations (e.g. sales, technical and management presentations), which include presentation of information and data as part of their job at any level in an organisation or as an entrepreneur, will also benefit. T +27 11 717 9503 / 9511 / 9519 E [email protected] W www.wits.ac.za/part-time OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE This course aims to introduce participants to the basic principles of public speaking and then to look at the special skills required to make a world class technical presentation. It includes the opportunity for course participants to put into practice what they learn by presenting a number of speeches during the course and receive feedback on these presentations from the World Class Speaking Coach. ADMISSION CRITERIA Matric or equivalent is a pre-requisite and participants need to be fluent in English. OUTCOMES AND COMPETENCIES To improve the level of competence of participants in technical presentation skills. STRUCTURE OF THE COURSE This unique course comprises a series of lectures combined with practical exercises. Topics covered are the following: • • • • • • • • • Develop a solid structure for your presentations. Develop compelling content for your presentations. Develop compelling stories that make unforgettable points. Open and close your presentation with impact. Enhance your presentations with dynamic delivery. Persuade your audience members to take the next step. How to effectively use visual aids. How to present technical information effectively. How to handle question and answer sessions. Detailed course outlines will be given to participants in the first lecture. COMMENCEMENT DATES Semester 1: February: Tuesdays 17:30 – 19:30 Semester 2: July: Tuesdays 17:30 – 19:30 Wits Plus ASSESSMENT OF PERFORMANCE CANCELLATION OF A COURSE Students will be required to attend the lectures, submit assignments and write an examination. Students will be required to achieve a minimum of 50% to satisfy the requirements of the programme and receive a certificate of competence. • Cancellation by a registrant more than 10 working days before the start date will result in liability for 25% of the course fees. • Cancellation in less than 10 working days before the start date, will result in liability for 40% of the course fees. • Cancellation after commencement of the course, will result in liability for 50% of the fees. • Students who do not meet the requirements to continue in the second half of a year course, will be refunded all fees paid in advance for that semester. •ICAM fees and parking disk fees are not refundable. •Cancellations thereafter will not be entitled to a refund and we do not permit automatic attendance at the next round of the course. LENGTH OF THE COURSE Lectures will take place once a week over 14 weeks. The duration of each lecture will be two hours (24 total contact hours). The 13th lecture will be revision and will be followed by the 14th a three hour examination. WHO IS THE LECTURER? The course will be facilitated by Dr.Ian Bratt, an experienced Toastmaster and certified World Class Speaking Coach. FEES R9 500, inclusive of the class notes. METHOD OF PAYMENT The fees for all courses are the responsibility of the individual attending the course. All fees must be paid prior to registration. Payment can be made by electronic payment or bank deposits. You will then need to bring the original deposit slip to Wits Plus on the registration dates as indicated on your letter of acceptance. You need to be in possession of Work Permit (which has to be endorsed with Home Affairs if we accept you) and your educational qualifications. Note that there is an International Registration Fee which is payable on acceptance for the course. CAMPUS ACCESS All short course participants must obtain a Visitor’s Access Card at a cost of ±R140 per year. Parking disc fees also apply: arrangements need to be made with the parking office. Note: Wits Plus, University of the Witwatersrand, reserves the right to withdraw a course from its programme should registrations not reach viable numbers. In this event a full refund will be made.
