RACH Diabetic Clinic Newsletter No. 24 Spring 2011 Welcome to our Spring newsletter. Hopefully you had fun in all the snow over Christmas and are looking forward to spring. Diabetes UK Events Now is the time to get your applications in for the Children’s Support Holidays The Scottish one is at Aviemore from July 16 for a week. The holidays are great fun and gives the children the opportunity to learn about their diabetes and have fun in a safe environment. There is also a Family Support Weekend in Inverness in November. The weekend is aimed at the whole family – parents, children with diabetes and brothers and sisters. More details on both these are available directly from Diabetes UK. www.diabetes.org.uk or telephone 0207424 1000. Going on Holiday This is the time of year you start planning your summer and October holidays. Remember to ask for a travel letter in plenty time if you are to be flying. Either ask at clinic or contact Linda – Dr Mayo’s secretary on the number at the end of the newsletter. If you are flying it is really important to carry all your equipment in your hand luggage. It is always a good idea to have double supplies and for two different people to carry it. If this is the first time you’ve gone on holiday with diabetes discuss it with someone at your clinic appointment or contact the diabetes nurses. DUPS date for your diary. Meetings of the parent support group for the early part of 2011 will be on the following dates Mon 25th April, Wed 15th Jun, Thur 25th Aug, Wed 5th Oct. Meetings are held in the children’s Hospital and more details can be had by contacting Tanya on [email protected] Are You Xpert? One of the meter companies has released a new meter called Xpert. It helps calculate insulin doses and correction doses for people on basal bolus regimens. You can preset your personal insulin:carbohydrate ratios and correction ratios. Then you do a blood glucose test and tell the meter how much carbohydrate you are about to eat. The meter then suggests the amount of insulin to give as a bolus. The meter is only useful if you are on a basal bolus regimen, are accurately counting your carbohydrates and are testing your blood glucose levels very regularly. If you would like to try this meter get in touch with Colin or Isla. Does sauce on the side matter? We are often asked if it is ok to continue to have ketchup, mayo, brown sauce etc once you have diabetes. The advice is very little different for people with or without diabetes. Sauces add a lot of calories, carbohydrate (usually as sugar), salt or fat to our diet. A little is fine but a lot can cause problems. An average portion of sauce is around 10-15g (a big teaspoonful) Look how much carbohydrate and salt you get from 15g of some sauces RACH Diabetic Clinic Newsletter No. 24 Spring 2011 Carbohydrate (g) Tom Ketchup 4.2 Salad Cream 3 Mayo 0.2 Light Mayo 1 Sweet Chilli 6 sauce Branston 4 Salt(g) Seasoning 0.33 0.4 0.23 0.26 0.6 Method 0.6 10minutes. Add cabbage and peas and cook a further 5 minutes. That’s it ready to go. Serve with some parmesan cheese if you like. Having a lot of ketchup with your meal may not make you feel any fuller but it will make a difference to your blood glucose levels. We should all be trying to eat less salt – remember the maximum amount recommended for children is much less than the 6g for adults. For children using Medtronic insulin pumps Replacement Pump clips will now be provided free of charge. To order if needed please call MedtronicTechnical support on 01923 205 167. Sick Day Rules This leaflet has been updated. Pick up your copy next time you are at clinic. Gently fry the onion, garlic, carrot, pepper and thyme until softened – about 6 minutes. Add beans, macaroni and stock. Simmer for Clinic Audits Colin and Isla are both undertaking audits of the service we provide at present to children and families with diabetes. You may well be asked to fill in short questionnaires at clinic. Please take a couple of minutes to complete these and hopefully we can improve the service we provide. Appointments A new computer system has been installed across NHS Grampian. This means that the diabetes nurses no longer have access to the clinic lists so cannot change appointments for you. If, for any reason you want to change your appointment please contact the outpatient reception directly on the number below.
