 The
Tainos had a village that was well
planned, usually circular in shape with a
ball court or ceremonial plaza. The court
was used to play a ball game called
batos.
 Communal
living was evident among the
Tainos as property, land, food canoes
and tools belonged to everyone.

 Their
houses were made of thatched
roof. These houses were called caneye.
 The
greatest crime was theft because
the whole tribe shared in the loss. A
thief suffered a horrible death, piereced
on a sharpened stick. A murderer was
banished or executed quickly by
strangling.

Tainos also had many festivals and
celebrations such as: naming of a baby,
wedding of a cacique and harvest time.
Emphasis was on dancing and singing;
and using drums, reed pipes, and
wooden gongs.

Tainos’ favourite dish was pepper pot
and their favourite food was cassava. They
used cassava to make cassava cakes, juice
and sauce. A sauce called cassereep was
used, which was made of cassava juice, salt
and pepper.
