YEAR 7 CAREERS DRESS-UP DAY
Well done to all the students who put in the
thought and effort to wear a costume depicting
what they would like to be in the future. There
were some amazing costumes and it added a bit
of colour and fun to the afternoon. Even at these
early stages, it is good to start thinking about who
you are and what sorts of jobs appeal to you.
Hopefully it will become a regular event, bigger
and better, in future years. Thank you, Year 7’s
for being part of the inaugural Careers Dress-Up
Day!

Dancing With The Staff
RUGBY 2017
Last weekend saw the first round of games for the U15's and 1st XV, while the combined teams did not
feature due to a bye for the JPC/WHHS U14's and RBHS V defaulting and pulling out of the 1st XV 3rd
Division competition.
The U15's are playing in the U15 Premiership which will be a step up from the grading games they have
been playing. They played Trident at Lakes High School and the step up was proof that they need to put
in more effort in the coming weeks. Not finishing on the right side of the ledger but better for the
experience.
Similarly the 1st XV made the step up to 1st Division and were up against it playing the 2016 champions
TWOM. JPC team was down a few boys due to injury and sickness however it was the squad that
needed to find their feet and prove that we were in the right division. The side line was sounding more
like a waiting room at the doctors with all the coughing and spluttering. An enthralling game was
expected and JPC competed well in the first half. They were trailing by 14 - 13 until the last seconds of
the 1st half when sloppy pay cost them a try right on half time. Down 21 - 13 they never gave up.
Replacements were needed as they had given it all on the field. TWOM got out to a better lead at 28 - 13
and were never pipped. JPC never gave up and they finished with scoring a late try for the final score of
35 - 18. We were never too far out of the game but we learnt that mistakes are costly in this division.
Onto next week and getting a full squad to pick from. Thanks to all those that travelled and supported the
team.

Coaches have a big role to play when it comes to supporting attitudes towards umpires or referees, they
know that it’s a tough job making the calls on the field and trying to get them right.
I’ve come to appreciate that sometimes the referee doesn’t have the same line of sight, as some spectators
or coaches.
A lot of people stop umpiring after incidents of physical or verbal abuse. Players and parents witness this
and decide NO, don’t ask me to take up the whistle and umpire or referee.
You actually do have fun umpiring or referring.
Especially if you have your own one liners.
Ie. Player: “Are you serious?”
Ref: “Yes, I am actually, 10 minutes”
I was refereeing at a tournament recently and a coach
was handing out treats, one of the players came over and
gave me her treat and said thank you ref.
PLEASE THANK THE REFEREE / UMPIRE
AFTER EACH GAME.
INNOVATION SUMMIT / KENNEDY SPACE CENTRE TRIP
In the Term 1 school holidays, Kesia Kurian (ex John Paul College Student) and I went to compete in the
International ‘Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge.’
This is a multi-phase science innovation and entrepreneurial
competition that brings together students from around the
world to develop viable solutions to benefit our world in one
of four areas:
1) Aerospace & Aviation
2) Cyber Technology & Security
3) Energy & Environment
4) Health & Nutrition.
We entered the ‘Energy & Environment’ category and
presented our product which was a NKP compound
biofertilizer – an alternative to traditional synthetic fertilizers used in the agriculture industry today. This
year the Innovation Summit was held at NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
During the Summit we got to meet students from around the
world (Australia, India, Canada, Thailand, USA, Japan and
Pakistan) and hear about their innovative ideas – ideas
ranging from space boots to recycled Styrofoam. We also
got to meet and listen to a range of guest speakers which
included Victor Glover who was part of the U.S. navy and is
currently a NASA astronaut, Liam Hawkins – a user
experience designer who works at London’s Silicon
Roundabout, and Jennifer Schlegel – director for innovation
at the Florida Institute of Technology. These were only a few
of the many guest speakers that there at the summit.
During our time at the Space Centre we also got to
go in a rocket launch and various other space
simulators, go to the Hall of Heroes and Legends
and the Astronaut Hall of Fame, get a tour of the
Kennedy Space Centre and look at the Atlantis Space
Shuttle and the rocket garden. Furthermore during
our time there the Kennedy Space Centre was
also preparing for the launch of a spacecraft in
partnership with SpaceX. This was a truly
memorable experience, any students interested in this challenge should consider developing their ideas
at the John Paul College & Bay of Plenty Science fair in August this year in preparation for the Conrad
Challenge which commences at the end of the year. See their website for details.
Students from ages 13 to 18, interested in the competition, should enter the JPC/BOP Science Fair to
develop their ideas.
